Making a tiled mantlepiece to go over a heater...

OK - is this a mad idea? I have to plan a tiny studio room in a flat. I have a standard sized storage/convector heater (I m wide 700mm high) and it's taking up vital space in the room.

Could I build a mantel structure around it and tile it - would a tiled 'shelf' over it be able to cope with the heat and be safe?

I'm thinking a trad stone(granite/marble) mantel piece type thing would be safe but could this also? Thinking pink firesafe plasterboard etc.

P.S. Mr Fish.... still very concious that photos are required... xxxx

I'd be changing storage heaters for something far more efficient and aesthetically pleasing.

I love the "for a rental" phrase. I never understand why people think it's perfectly good enough for a tenant but you'd not have it in your own home, and yes I do have a property I let and I'm also a tenant!

I did check out heaters - well over 1k. They could have that if they don't mind another £100 a month rent. You are probably a great tenant but you have to assume a tenant will disrespect your stuff so I dare not buy top of the range in case they break my heart. They'll have a great bathroom and kitchen will fab tiles though!!

I'm sure there would have been other options but at the end of the day it's your house and your disrespectful tenants.
I have the opposite view, if a place is nice people tend to look after it not saying that your place won't be nice when it's finished...

I agree - it will be a nice as I can get it but don't want to spend a fortune on a heater. There will be various tenants over the next 20 years - lets hope they are all good ones!
