hi i try and let the customer buy all the tiles add grout sealer and so on ,as shops today will do a deal as they walk through the door and nom match the deal you would of got ,so let them but the lot its down to me then on a meter price or day rate ,i keep my day rate high so they think no way do it on the meter price ,but then i make the same if not more doing it that way as i get the job done faster ,but then when the jobs done the customer is happy ,they forgot about your day rate they didnt like and get the cheque book out pay you ,im happy they happy ,happy days , but it is getting tougher down here all the time due to the diy-ers , and like you said everyone is out for themselfs ,we all have bills and mouths to feed ,,

sorry about my spelling guy ,was ment to say let them buy the lot 😳

if you do that you leave yourself open for problems .your best bet is to supply adh grout Silicon w/p etc that way you can guarantee your work .salesmen (as you read on here not all)don't fix tiles and don't know their limitations there's always a chance you rock up to the job you've traveled some distance and the adh is not suitable best to remove the temptation and headache and supply your own just explain to customer at quote stage why you prefer to supply adh etc and it will work in your favor :8:

Price fixing is ' Sick Bird ' - Thats illegal for those that do not know. Be careful

I've read all the posts on this subject and Dan has hit the nail on the head. Be different - offer something else. Go up in market and look for those customers who will pay for a real quality job, guarrenteed and well done.

I offer a total service ie UFH, margin on materials, plastering, electrics, plumbing, decor and timber work. If you cannot do all of those jobs yourself, get in your opposite number and make a margin on his rates [CIS tax to pay which is a b... std nuisace, but worth doing].

As an example, I went to look at a restoration of Victorian Floor, our base strength business and next thing the customers asked about replacement ceiling in another room, then a new hearth and refurb of cast iron fireplace inc new tile panels at the side, then how about a new piece of carrara marble at the front door. Then front door hinges are worn out - so we replaced with new brass roller bearing hinges and so it goes on and on. All at a margin. Oh - forgot, we are having welding done on the fireplace - specialist work and shot blasted. We will iron paste it and remount it on the wall. Also we were asked to replace some wonky floor boards and a couple of rotten joists in pitch pine and sand and reseal the floor. Job is almost done. One happy customer who is confident that a quality job is well done and is sure to call on us again.

This is unusual I grant you, but its where we are at and where I aimed to be a few years ago when I did not want to compete with other tilers on mass / site work.

Food for thought or not ?

I treat every job different based on a few things , size and type of tile , condition of walls , floor , size of job , customer , how much work I have ,and if you feel you have made a mistake in pricing you can always add a bit on to materials , fixed prices would vary too much depending on which part of the country you stay in .

Do you think it's worth us trying to create and adhere to a base-rate for our/your work?

What I'd be hoping to acheive with this is a base-rate for each region or area or even the whole country. So hopefully we'd be able to increase this low-pricing a little?

Perhaps some of us that are working for a cheap per meter price need to refuse that work at that price? And get details of the tilers who won the job for pricing so low? I'd certainly give them a bell and a bolloxing at the least.

Perhaps I'm barking up the wrong tree? Perhaps some of you NEED to be pricing so low to get work to ensure you're working?!?!
Thinking it would be interesting to know what the rates are, as per area/ region, but "setting a price would be imo, against the nature of the business, where competition is always around he corner. I don't go below the competition's price as I'm lucky enough to live in an area, where (touch wood) there is more demand than offer, and therefore, at the moment it seems like a race, to c who charges more!...

I always say "if you think A professional is expensive, wait till you get an amateur" as Simon said, you get what you pay for, I had one guy specifically request a "Dubai hotel" finish, in his downstairs lavvy, yet asked me to more than half my price in exchanange for his help.
Oh sorry sir, are you experienced in 7 star hotel fitting? I'm not the f*#*#*g job centre!!!
The price is the price and I won't buy my work by going in cheap. Quality speaks volumes!!!
