T.T.A tiling accessor

hi there.we had an agreement that they were going to use the powder based as stated earlier.the tiler brought the wrong adhesive as ive found out.trying to save himself time and money.
to be honest craig i wish that i could be more help but i had a similar prob with a builder who worked on my house. we also had a verbal agreement on certain aspects of the build but nothing in writing. sadly the agreed materials were replaced by substandard materials. after having a building inspector survey the work he (although agreed that the materials were in his eyes the cheapest possible way of doing the job) said because nothing had warped or slipped the work was upto building regs and without a written material list claiming money paid out back would be next to impossible. to make things worse the builder was the husband of my cousin and has a big established property development company around the normanby, eston area. never again will i not have a full itemisted list of work and materials. you have my sympathies and good luck.

i have just been talking to the tile association and they told me that the british standards has only reccomendations on tiling.can anyone tell me if tilers have to adhere to these or can they just do what they want which has happened to me
cheers
craig

Hi Craig.
British Standards aren't law, they are however 'best practice' guide lines, if, as in your case, the job was done unsafely and there was an accident and it went to court, it would be the BS that were quoted and ruled upon IIRC. As for the do tilers just do what they want, I suppose it's the same in all trades, you get they good 'uns and the bad 'uns, you have unfortunately got a bad one.

  1. I think that from a professional tilers point of view we all regard British Standards as a guide line to our installations. I believe that most on here will follow these guidelines and will produce a job that they are proud of and more importantly have provided their customer with a safe and long lasting quality of work. Something that they are proud to say 'I have done that and I'm proud of it' . afterall I for one rely on recommendations for my work, I don't advertise and I'm busy.
  2. I have recently been involved with sorting out a very bad tiling job, in fact a total rip out and start again. This customer has taken it to Trading Standards and they are pursuing the company. It might be worth while talking to trading standards again and push the points that you have raised here to them. Possibly backing it up with the views that other members on here have raised.

What did it say on their estimate/quote to you? Was the work not listed step by step including the exact materials to be used with MSDS sheets?

the work wasnt listed step by step.i had an agreement with them to use the flexible rapid set including porcel bond.they said they would use it but didnt.
the tiles are on wall and floor but how long for ?
i have not paid anything yet but the company have now agreed for weber to come and do a check to see if the water based adhesive has bonded even though its the wrong stuff.
i want tiling done again with the required powder based so why should i let someone check something thats not supposed to be used.
this is why i asked earlier about if tillers were supposed to follow british standards

as Alan says BS are guidelines as are the guidelines for adhesive usage.
all companies such as weber, bal ,mapei will have guidelines for their products as to which adhesive is recommended for which tiles this will ensure that their garauntees are valid. in my opinion if they inspect the work and find that a non recommended adhesive has been used on the tiles then they as a company cannot garauntee their product and as such the bathroom company cannot garauntee the safety and standard of workmanship. THIS IS ONLY IN MY OPINION AND YOU MAY NEED TO SPEAK WITH THEM TO CLARIFY.
Chris

i have a letter from weber stating that if the adhesive was not used as per data sheet they cant garauntee there product. The fitters have said they will give me a 10yr garauntee but how do i know were they will be in this time.i think really that means nothing.they have already went against our agreement and ive lost the trust.

IMO you need to let the adhesive company, the bathroom company and the tiler come and inspect the work, this seems to be the next appropriate step, I appreciate you dont want them back in your house and you think they'll lean on the adhesive guy, but to be honest if its the wrong addy its the wrong addy and the addhesive rep wont put him / herself in the position of guaranteeing an unsuitable product.

If you dont allow this to happen the company will just say they arranged to have it inspected, to get an independant opinion from an expert with probably the best knowledge of the adhesive your going to find, and that you were obstructive and prevented it from happening.

No way will the adhesive rep condone the misuse of their own product, its their job to make sure its used properly and shift the blame when failure occurs onto someone else, it put money on the rep coming and confirming wrong adhesive used, infact id put my house on it.

You should let them all come and be present, or they might turn round at a later date and say YOU put pressure on the adhesive rep to say its wrong, in the same way you are presuming they will be able to lean on him to side with them.

Just my 2ps worth.

Check out the Sales of Goods Act 1979 -

"Goods supplied must be 'as described' 'fit for purpose' and of satisfactory quality."

Using an adhesive described by the manufacturer and not suitable for use with porcelain says to me it was "not fit for purpose".
