Topps it all!!!

I got a call from my local Topps manager this morning. A couple ( South African) had come into the shop and needed a recommended tiler to lay 20m2 of natural stone in two adjoining rooms, both plyed out with UFH wires in place yesterday by an elecrician, not covered with SLC etc.

So, I was asked how much per m2 I would charge, all materials already bought via the place on the net they got the stone, I said £35 m2.............he told them, I couldn't get over it, they were ranting and raving.......£35.we can get it done for £20 m2 0r even £120 a day.........

Then I was asked how long.......three days I said.........what three days, we want it done by thursday evening..............

Then I was asked, if you just lay them and they do all the sealing and grouting etc would you do it all in for £150............

I told the manager that he should know better to ring ANY tiler with prices like that..................:mad2:

Some people want something for nothing. I think we've all had one like that. Better to turn it down.

wouldn't be worth it for that price! had people trying to haggle like that before,you'll be surprised how mant phone back within a few days to book you in at your price!

Stick to your guns or topps might tar you with the cheap tiler brush and try it again..

your getting it as well fred, i thought it was just me

people have got this idea in their head that things are going to be a lot cheaper due to the credit crunch

and they are going to get a proper tradesman for £30 a day and a banana

im now telling them that the credit crunch doesnt affect me as i dont give credit

so thats my price...............non negiotable

i also piont out that everything, particularily materials ,is going up in price not down so why should i drop my prices

i tried that route and it doesnt work, im still suffering cashflow problems a month on despite getting all the cheques in this week

so have a beer mate and forget idiots like that, they will get the job they deserve 😛rrr:

thats what gets me so much. Then later today, get a call from a lady in an ex-council flat, I quoted the other night. Take old tiles off one wall, bath side, and take out border tiles each end of bath previous owner had used to try and stop leaks. Get my plasterer in, he does his own quote so I don't know his price.

Then I return , replace ends of bath with 6 x 6 inch whites and the new plasterer wall I'm putting up soft coloured blue mozaics.

A day & a half for me, £300 plus materials............funny old life.

I got a call from a bloke last week to price up a bathroom for him. Went down to take alook, before i could even say anything he told me he basically buys property to rent or sell. :

"yeah i am from a building background, i have got houses in Florida, spain, 12 around this area and 2 in Italy"

Measured up was about 18 sqm, so priced him around the £350 mark.
"WHAT!!" he said "was expecting about £180 - £200 mark"

"get out of it, you must know the going rates if you are a builder and do these houses all the time"

He then proceeded to show me all the wooden floors that have been laid in the house, "got the lot laid for £70 off some foreign lad".

Then back to his bathroom:

"how much without an invoice?"
"£350"

His next comment just pushed me too much:
"no wonder us builders are using foreign labour when you charge prices like that"

I had to follow up with a torrent of abuse, needless to say i didn't get the job 🙂
