Re: Trimand mosaics

Starting to feel a bit sick now...what a balls up from start to finish. thank's for all the advice.

Re: Trimand mosaics

In future stick ( no pun intended) with a slow set cement based adhesive. once you get used to it you will be fine. Saves all the worry....dont forget you will need to prime most substrates 1st though.

Re: Trimand mosaics

Just a couple of qick questions. If you were using tubbed adhesive what would you have use to bed out the mosaics?

And an unrelated question. I've been asked to replace a damaged floor tile, only problem is, it's laid over underfloor heating (electric matting) the tile in question is right at the edge of the room near the door frame. Any advice on knocking it out without damaging the heating?

I would have realised that the mosaic would need building out so i would have used cement based adhesive from the start. Most adhesive makers of tubbed gear will have a max depth it can be used , usually this is around 3 - 4mm applied with a 6mm spreading trowel.

Very carefully i would say. Was any uncoupling membrane or SLC used and was this over the UFH. If so you should be ok, if not then you need to be extremely careful and no guarrantees can be given.

brendan have you actually fitted the border yet or have you just fitted the tiles and are yet to fit the border? also i would use bal mosaic fix or a white cement based addy suitable for glass etc in the future mate. if you have tiled half the room and not yet fitted the border then your okay as you can bed it out

I've stuck the boarder in too I'm afraid. The guy I've done it for is happy with the mosaics sitting back a bit and it's only become an issue now because of the trim. I'm yet to fit any tiles on the other side of the corner so levelling up the tiles and trim round there wont be a problem, and the wall only carries on for about 150mm before the tiling ends. I may have to just see how it looks and fill any gaps with grout...it's going to look a bit cheap though.

As long as you have learned something then something good will have come out of it....its all a learning curve

Generally I would agree though last year I fixed some Wickes glass mosaics and it said on the box to use a ready mixed adhesive not a cement based one. Something to do with the coloured coating on the back of the tiles I expect.
