update of my bathroom retiled after last mess

my last thread was closed due to some members arguing so ive started a new one with an update on my bathroom re tiled after the lady tiler made such a mess, and sadly the new isn't very good. I was recommended this tiler from a manager of a tile shop I know and I was expecting brilliant job done as he, told me how good he was and how happy I will be instead its a mess and only a bit better than the other womans tiling, but he kept asking me for payment every few days so stupid me paid him apart from £70 outstanding, its cost me 3 times more and im not happy at all, hes supposed to be coming back on weds to do tiny finishing touches but hes unaware how long the snag list is. ive got 2 broken floor tiles already after a wk, cos hes done exactly the same as other tiler where the sub floor stops at bath and door hes not but anything under edge of tiles and 2 have snapped. the tile upside down on my window, he had propped up for 3 days and when he removed prop , within 2 mins it fell in my bath scratching it in 6 places and too bad to get out myself , hes denied tile did that , my the painter has told me hes brother is a bath repair guy and will try and do it, he knelt by bath to look with padded knees and tile cracked hence 1 break , I feel gutted that its not right yet again. some of the probs are below

ive got 2 tiles in my shower facin directly at me with tiny chipped corners which r goin to bug me

hes not siloconed around the shower or sink

hes left the floor tiles edges not packed under hence tiles are breaking and I warned him other tiler had done that and hes done the same

tiles at ceiling all diff heights

hes not grouted behind my door

hes left a raw edge of tile on my cupboard exposed

window all packed with uneven grout at back as cut too short and none of the lines follow the wall

the edgings are all left sharp grr

hasn't put floor tile behind my loo

some of the grouting and Silicon hasn't covered the edges of tiles where is cut unevenly

ive got some lips on tiles , some on a new stud wall so no excuses for that wall

hes left tiles covered in smeared grout and hasn't cleaned them after 1 sponge down after he grouted and told me I had to do it

I feel sick to stomach over all this, I cant see how hes going to manage to sort all this out at all, no way I can pay 3rd time to have this redone if he refuses to do it. some would be nightmare to re do, some im going to have to put up with, I cant have the chipped tiles replaced as my showers in place now and its on a stud wall that will come apart as it did last time. im really really upset and annoyed, he wont do anything I ask, I pointed out some of the top tiles have steps where they are different heights and asked for him to re do, hes refused and said will Silicon over and I wont notice, im not too happy about this

Have you asked the tile shop manager to come and have a look at it and explain why he's recommending a tiler who's churning out poor quality work like that?

no I haven't yet, I want to see if he turns up weds as promised to give him opportunity to sort it out and im going to say ive been told it should be left polished not for me to do , I just wanted to see if I had a genuine complaint cos I don't know anything about tiling and I don't know why the tile at the door has snapped with someone walking on it and I think hes going to blame the quality of tiles to be honest , hes never taken any responsibility yet to things ive said not happy with, that's why thought I would give an update to get feed back so It would help me talk to him on weds, failing that I will speak to the tile shop manager I don't really want to drag him into it , he was doing me a favour and I feel bad its not his fault

Really? Some favour it's turned out to be. I wouldn't be surprised if the manager has never seen any of his work he just gets a cut from every job he passes on!

Tell him that your going to report this work to the tile shop manager if the manager has any sense he wont recommend him again this way it will also hit him in is pocket some of that work is not good at all

the prob is the manager of the tile shop is my daughters boyfriend dad and I don't want her getting upset shes got enough prbs goin on , I think ur right he probably hasn't seen any of his work, he saw pics on my mob of the other tilers work and to be honest this isn't much better. ill see what happens weds if he turns up. hes laid some antico type floor in my loo and that's all coming unstuck too grr

all the more reason to enlighten him then sparkle, tbh the job is crap and if that's his (the tilers) usual standard then he needs reporting under Trades Description Act..

wow I thought it wasn't great but didn't realise it was that bad omg , hes such a nice guy too that makes it harder to say something, although I think he could turn awkward if pushed, I defo want the window doing again cos it looks an eye sore thick grout at back cos tiles not cut deep enough to go to window and don't follow the brick affect of the walls and the edgings all sharp at the corners to touch, think im going to have to put up with chipped tiles in shower or that's going to be horrendous to get off and shower now fixed to that wall

Hi sparkle, you not had any luck with this and now your seriously out of pocket. Good news, these smallish issues with your bathroom can be rectified however the bad news is the general standard of the work is very poor and all the snagging in the world won't fix that but what you gonna do? Pay again... Nope! What you can do is learn a lesson from this!! Whenever you hire someone to do anything, be it tile your bathroom or fix your car... Do your homework on them, also, make them aware of the standards you expect then in the end if your not happy ... Don't pay pay for it.

in all fairness, it's a rip-out and re-do, you haven't had a good experience and certainly not a "duty of care". I'd certainly be seeking re-imbursement and costs, these cowboys really do need to stop trading/ripping people off.

its hard to answer that cos he came and only stayed 3-5 hrs each time , first wk 3 days of 3-4 hrs, to remove tiles and patch up wall, next wk again no full days about 3 days again, I think he stayed slightly longer but left no later than 3pm and started 8.30, hes not been here for a wk now, but said hes coming back on weds ,but doesn't know full extent of snag list

I cant have it ripped out easily now cos ive had plumber put in my shower cubicle doors, omg this is a nightmare , and would have to have someone come and take them out and reinstall etc, this is going to cost me loads that I don't have , I knew it wasn't that great but honestly didn't know it was that bad :-(

So, in a nutshell,

The 1st issue was between you and the lady tiler - after advice from here, you managed to sack her off and get some money for replacement tiles/materials etc.

Then you recruited a 2nd tiler through your own means, you did your own 'research' and 'trusted' this manger of a tile shop who is related to the postman's uncles dog - or whatever..

The guy starts work, does a day or 2 and gets paid most of the money up front, on the promise that he'll return to do a bit of siliconing?

Then we notice that things aren't quite right and come back here for advice again, de-ja-vous?

I'm struggling to come up with some positive ideas for you to be honest.
I think the blame should be split 3 ways, the manager for recommending a div, the cowboy for being a div, and you for not learning anything from the 1st episode

You should have been on the ball Sparkle with what happened first time round. I'm sorry but a pic on a mobile phone does not always tell the whole truth, either way, good or bad.

You were recommended by a fair few people to get to see the guys work before allowing him to start work in your bathroom., you clearly chose to ignore that advice.

You are back to square one, with an unacceptable bathroom, and going down the route of recompense from this cowboy.

A word of warning for any tradesmen you allow into your house. Firstly check for spurs at rear of ankle and secondly, make sure you check their mode of transport. If there's a horse outside steer well clear!!!!!

do you even know why I am asking????? unless it took him one day in and out she should of been checking his work as he walked out the door and brought it up when he turned up the next day. sparkle it was very foolish to pay this man after what had happened previously you had a serious amount of advice and support from the guys on this site. you should have listened to it... all you can do is try and get what you can out of this guy when he turns up because I doubt very much you will see him again once you confront him

Sparkle, it's sad, really is that you pay money for something and expect it to be carried out to high standard no matter what that is right?.. Reality is, this country is a joke and trust nobody with anything!! Learn your lesson... Sorry lass!
