Walked off the job today Very angry!!!!!!

P

peckers

tHIS IS LONG YOU ARE PRE- WARNED

Ill put you in the picture first! A builder phoned me up asking me to do some tiling for him 3 bathrooms and some tiling repair work, I havent worked for him before but any work at the moment is better then none,"Or so I thought"
Turned up to do the first job, the repair work, it was a house he had built and sold that had had water damage to the utility room previously tiled by some one else, The grout had all cracked all over the floor and there was a couple of broken tiles, The floor was bouncing like you wouldnt believe, It is a floating floor now there was numerous problems here!!!! the adhesive was not stuck to the floor and when i removed the damaged tiles and whipped out all the grout every tile was moving around, I phoned the builder told him to come and have a look at what I had found!
The chipboard flooring was black and mouldy there was too much flex in the floor the adhesive that had been used was the wroung type and it wasn't stuck to the floor atall!! I told him the flooring needed lifting and replacing and then to overboard it with wbp ply to stop the flex and to retile with a 2 part flex adheive and re-grout, He wasn't having none of it just replace the broken tiles and regrout it"he said"!!!:incazzato:So this i reluctantly did.
Right off to next job! bathroom tiling turned up the walls were in that much of a state i couldnt possibly fitt the 500x 330 tiles to them! So phoned him and told him what the problem was and he agreed to pay me to put the walls right, so i spent the day putting the walls right ready to start tiling next day, He then phones me asks me to go back to the previous job as there were two more tiles that needed replacing in the kitchen area this time!
Met the house owners lovely people, they showed me the tiles that needed replacing, as I walked over the floor i could here cracking noises and you could phisically see the grout moving as you walked over the entire floor!:yikes: Lifted the tiles and again a floating floor, wroung adhesive used, and loads of movement, as i removed the two tiles the tiles either side were moving! The home owners could see there was a major problem and was strait on the phone to the builder:lol: The builder comes to have a look and takes me to one side and asks my opinion, I told him"that it all needs taking up overboarding and redoing" I aint paying for that he says!!! He agrees with the home owners that i will lift 8 tiles in that area and put new ones back down and then leaves, The home owners are then telling me that they are not happy with the job that had been done and what did i think about it. Now im stuck piggy in the middle and just tell them if there not happy then to take it back up with the builder and if needed to involve a third party!
Once completed I am then asked to goto another job tiling another bathroom, turned up had a look:yikes::yikes::yikes:
He wanted me to tile with a 600x300 on top of all ready tiled walls which was ontop of skimmed plasterboard!!!!!
Again i complained to the builder and he agreed i could remove it:thumbsup: 20 mins then he turns up sees the plasterboard coming away with the tiles, STOP what are you doing"he shouts" removing it like you agreed, I aint paying for that he says I explain the weight issues and showed him what i found behind the old tiles, paint, wallpaper, skim and 9mm plasterboard fitted to stud walls at 400mm centres!!! he then tells me to patch up what i had removed and tile over it all!!!!!! I tells him that you can not tile it it is a accident waiting to happen!!!
He wont listen to reason so i pack up me tools and jump into the van!!!
Good bye you COWBOY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now im only hoping that i will get paid for the work that i have done!

like your signature says, you cut tiles, not corners. well done for standing your ground peckers. stand your ground on the money front too

Send the bill ASAP.

Dodgy builders, I hate them. It makes you wonder what else he's scrimped and saved by doing on the house. It's a real shame for the owners of the houses if they have to put up with crap like that. I'd tell the home owners to take the bugger to court if he doesn't pay up mate as they'll make him rip it up and re-do it I'm sure.

ive gotta be honest. im shocked u even did the first job for him. that was cowboyish

i know i'll get shot down for saying that but ive had no work for ages and bn to hell and back because of our job but i wouldnt do stuff like that

sorry for bn honest

it sounds to me not only is he a cowboy!,but he is a tight wadd and trying to save dosh , in my experience i wouldent wait on the cheque mate, there's plenty of %$*? out there at the mo .unlucky pecks hang in there fella :thumbsup:

well said peckers:hurray: the reason this guy wanted you to do the floors is because as he got down on his knees his spurs would be stickin in his A***.....

Sorry to hear your problem. I suspect that getting any money out of buffalo bill might prove tricky as well, I'm afraid.

As I'm said before, start making notes of everything that happened, that was said and that was done - WITH DATES & TIMES.

If you end up in court, the fact of your having detailed notes, with dates and times, will make the court aware that you are not the cowboy.

You might contact the house owner discreetly to help cover your own back as I'm pretty sure your cowboy builder will be trying to blame you for everything that's wrong with his life!

Good luck and well done for sticking up for yourself.

Its so hard to get a good team together when there are multiple trades that have to work together. Sounds like this is a car crash of a team so probably best off out of it.

I found myself in a sticky situation on the first job, after having lifted the tiles, and the builder wouldnt have me reinstall it properly i didd'nt want to put it back as it was, However there was now a hole in the floor which the owners could trip over and possibly injur themselves, so i thought putting it back as say a temporary job(because the rest of it will be up soon for sure) it would be safer for them for now!
and as for the rest of the floor after seeing it on the second visit I was found to be in a very similiar position, But once the house owners got involved i thought they might have sorted it out! i was stuck piggy in the middle as i diddnt lay the floor in the first place. But i did tell the house owners to get a third party involved if they couldnt get the floors put right properly by the builder!!
I did give the builder the benefitt of the doubt and went onto the next jobs but i was wroung once a cowboy always a cowboy,

but honesty is the best policy:thumbsup:
