What to do when you bump into someone who owes you money...?

Without having to name names, and companies, we were out today doing an estimate, when we heard...Allright...its been to long, how you doing? Ohh my god, the dirty rotten scum bag who stitched us up has only just turned up to price the same job.

Heres the problem, any other time in any other place all hell would have broken out, but a hotel lobby is not the place for a brawl and slagging match. So we did the hardest thing possible, and that was to do nothing and ignore him. My two lads did me proud today, by blanking him. This is a piece of filth of the first order, who effectively ripped us off, and is legally protected, as he transferred all his assets into his wifes name.

It seems that some people, have a golden ticket in life, to tread on others and think that its ok to do so....

I'm a big beleiver in Karma, 'What goes around, comes around'. It might be months or years, but in my experince people like this get whats coming to them one way or another. You'll be reading a paper or talking to an old friend one day and this scumbag will have lost everything. Then you can have the last laugh.

Lynn i would check with a lawyer as i know in Scotland there is a time limit set for this kind of thing. Hope that makes sense. If he transfered it to her name say just before or after you billed him it's still classed as his assets.

In this case, I would consider whether it would be worth warning the client as to how this guys conducts his business. There may be an element of risk if they were to work with him. The downside is that this could look like you hold a grudge (Which you would have every right to)

Always risky bad mouthing other firms, i've only done it the once I think, as I knew they were just about to go under with lots of debts. All I said was 'you may want to pay a deposit by credit card', it wasn't even work i was quoting on but i knew these customer where about to use them for something else

The client knows what happened in the past! at the time when it all kicked off I think everyone on the main sites knew. 14 men and me all needing our money, promises, promises, threats, lawyers, he knew how to play the system. I nearly lost my house over this, we survived, were intact first sign of late payments now we send someone in because you dont want to but you have to. In the meantime scumbag and his partner set another company up and its all forgotten, and then today he walks in, I cant even tell you how it sick I felt when I heard his voice, of all the places to run into him. I know what Hillhead means, and Im surprised no-one took the same course of action.

Id like to believe that Brians right about karma, we'll see what happens.

I'd have put him right on the spot in front of the customer, something along the lines of..."Oh, are you trading again, maybe now you're in a position to pay me what you owe me"

He'd be put in his place, no matter where he was or what he was doing. He can maybe hide behind being Ltd and think he can walk away, but morally he still owes you and should man-up and pay.....!!
