Both mate. The tool started of in the auto industry but is now transfering to the decrotive industry. So far I've used it as a stand alone sander, jointing composite worktops, polishing travertine edges. Not used it as a buffer as yet but the attachment to do so is fairly cheap so was going to get it anyway. Had it about 18 months now and still love it
