why do used cars/vans have VAT added from traders?

been looking out for an L200 on internet, yet every time I see one that I think is in my price bracket there's always the dreaded VAT to add:mad2:, surely these vehicles have been through the VAT treadmill already?, I may have to go private I think, but I'm looking to spend 10k and I'm a bit wary about buying private "caveat emptor" and all that!

commercials have vat added if the owner is vat registered as the vatman will take tax from the sale

find a private seller whose not vat registered

But you only really have 2 choices.

Pay slightly over the odds + vat at traders

Or go Private with no vat and a bit more risk.

I could say I was lucky and got mine via ebay from an ex trader who sold it privately. It did take me 3 months to find a low miler, good aged van....

I got a good deal, private buyer but you have to look about. I know a van trader but he couldn't beat a private sale

Just a thought here. Do you think it possible there might be a rush on buying vans before the vat increase? If there is the prices will be high and afterwards maybe a better deal to be had? Just thinking aloud.
