How do people...
I have a question for all tillers working in the field of natural stone.

Since i have entered the field of fitting stone i have been plagued by a number of hindrances in relation to the client’s hissy fits about on-site cutting.
The tiles are all generally 20mm thick and are as you’d probably know a nightmare to cut on-site.

I was wondering is there any way i can get round this, a way of having a job pre-cut and ready to go when u arrive on site.?

If there is a way of doing this is it feasible to do it on a domestic scale?

Is there anybody out there to do it for me?

And if so is the service expensive?

Any answers on the subject would be much appriciated..........guwan u boy ya!!!

precut

unless you are spot on with your measurements then precutting is a big nono

i use a tarp on the garden so any mess is on the tarp and not the garden or in the house, if make a mess clean up right away.

some companys will precut stone for you but its not too cheap but why throw away all your money on something you can easily do yourself, and as no walls are ever straight despite architects and builders promises that they are you will be advised to cut each and every tile yourself that way you are not mucking around blaming the cutting company and wasting time getting more cut and if you make an arse of the size of the cut, you need more tiles, again i wouldnt ask the customer to pay more when i arsed it up, get your cuts right with the right cutting width and save time hence money

invest in a decent wet cutter and keep a few spare blades and this will pay for itself in no time

Sorry noel mate no way round this one..be it naturals or any tile...precise cutting needs to be done as you go with the job......customers should understand this.....

Perhaps a warning when you go round to quote to cut down on the hissy fits. But the money is in stone due to the specialist cutting that's involved, if you got someone else to do it, what are you doing for the extra cash? (the company would get it, as TheWrightTiler said)

Stone has always been a maul to cut and always will be. I think if you can ensure tiles are being fitted 100% of the time while you're on the job, as in, get some labour help, a good cutter and more importantly a decent blade (cheap brands are hit and miss) you'll find you're not on the job as long and wouldn't annoy 'her?' as much and as somebody always cutting the mess wouldn't be so bad as they could be cleaning if they've not got cuts to do. And generally wouldn't be running back in to fit / check the tile fits.

get yourself some tarpauline and build a makeshift room outside for your cutting this will help isolate and contain most of the dust and mess but wear a mask,you can also buy dome type tents for this purpose also.

Fair playlads, all replys have been taken on-board,
I've been talking to a company here in ireland bout off-site cutting, they reckon they have found a way of precicly measuring an existing floor plan, which in theory give's u an exact representation of the intended job, they have offered to do a deal with me where i liease with them at the start of the job and they pre-measure a job and provide for me:

1) An exact floor area (no waste when ordering a job)

2) Bespoke ar standardisied designs that are taylored to intended floors sizes(all cut off-site in their yard)

3) pre-sealed tiles

4)And the big whammy all edge tiles cut to within a maximum tollerence of 10mm!!! with a 20mm tile kicker its seems promising

The company is only in its infancy so they ofered a lifelong cost price discount if i help them roll out their plans.... they reckon that the percisiness of the measuring tecnique allows them to pre-cut with the accurateness needed....

They said that in theroy if the tiler sets out from an exact point (provided by them) and keeps within a 5mm tollerence the jobs a good un, i was tinking its too good to be true but even if all edge tile had to be cut i can still offer

1) the customer a bespoke or standardised design without the major hassel of cutting an intricate design,

2) the whole job comes out of a crate numbered corrisponding to a floor plan provided,

3) the tiles are pre-sealed and the natural flecks running throught the tile is pre-cordinated so its a matter of taking them from the pack one after the other

4)so i was thinking even if the edge tiles were out they would not be by much and it would be a matter of shaving a few here and there..if that was the case the time saved not having to cut them bas$%rdswould be un-real.

what do you's think too good to be true?.........

let us know after a couple of jobs how you got on. also can it be cost effective? could be a hassle getting tiles from customer to company and back etc. Get a labourer get him cutting and cleaning for yer. Also set the customers expectations lol yer cutting stone and using cement based products theres goner be some mess. seal the room then they cant get in lol
