Just a few lines to anyone thinking of making the jump into self employment.

Like most people I have been a wage slave for a long time I am 32 now have two children and all the financila trapping our society offers.

If you look back over the last few months at my posts you will see my journey into self employment and my feelings of fear, excitement and doubt and all the encouragement and advice I got along the way.

Well, I got up this morning, spent an hour with my children before nursery, came home made a few call, delivered a couple of quotes and got confirmation of a job for Thursday. Whilst drinking a cup of coffee I realised no one could sack me or make me redundant, I answer to myself and am even more excited and motivated to make every day count.

Thanks to you all for the continued support and for anyone else considering this, do it, do it now, I am still scared but it is a nice scared....

I wish you all the best jimbob......its a make or break situation and its up to you now mate...youv'e made the jump now go and get em....

Grumpy I'm gonna be picking your brains when I get my first self assessment  Its nice to know there is an accountant on here! I already owe you a thankyou... I modified a version of yous estimate sheet it was very useful so thankyou for that.

Aye good on you JIM.

Being self employed has got to be one of the best feelings life has got to offer, and I know it's always uncertain at times wether it's been the right thing to do, but you'll never know until you go for it.

Good luck

Well done......
some hints and tips from an old timer....

1. open a high interest account and pay your tax into it after each job...i.e earn £100 put £20 (self employed) into tax account and £80 in your pocket,
this way your tax bill is never a problem.....plus it earns interest....and if you get a rebate due to your expenses......you can pay for your holiday!!!!!!!!

2.get a credit card.....and use it only for business..all your tools, parking, sign writing,petrol,m.o.t's etc.... this will be a full financial account and you can pass this over to your accountant and tell him "everything on here is business".
will also make your life easier...no need to find cash for materials etc.
P.s pay the full balance of this card on each statement.

3.Remember to save....there are always quiet periods in any business.....

these three points have kept me in good stead...i am just glad someone told me to do this in the begining....otherwise you end up with a lot of paper to store for 5 years,a tax bill for £5000 and no cash in the bank to pay it...
(they give you 28 days to pay the bill)

and when the phone has not rung....no money in the bank to cope with lifes little problems.....like the morgage....
well done and good luck....
