UK EE Degree Level 6 Options

I'm nearing the end of the 2nd year of my degree and now have a choice on which modules I would like to do for next year.

I'm based in the North of England and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions (and reasonings) as to which ones would be the most beneficial for me to take due to my location?

At the time of making this post, the choices I had in mind were:

  • Power Systems
  • Instrumentation and Control of Dynamical Systems
If needed, I can explain more about what I would...

375kw squirrel cage 415v motor starting issues

Hey everyone thanks for reading.

We are having an issue with our cone crusher and starting. We have had engineers design the motor and starter know the full application and torque requirements of the cone crusher.

We are having intermittent starting issues. And have been for 2 years no one has been able to work out what is happening. We are using a soft starter and we change current limit settings. Does not matter if we increase it or then decrease it back to original settings it will...

Variable Wattage Box

Hi everyone,
I want to make a variable Wattage box. Mainly for testing purposes.
I want some small scale, medium and if possible, some big scale variable wattage ranges.
Lets start with something easy, the small scale. From the back of my mind, I would use a small npn tr like BC548 or BD681 to variate between tens of miliwatt. (Without a Heatsink). For variation of hundreds of mW up to 1W, I remember from my tests, that my 2N3773 was the best choice in this range, again (Without a Heatsink)...

W2D4 - DGA What is it and why do we do it?

What is DGA? Dissolved Gas Analysis.
This is just a VERY basic explanation of DGA.
Power transformers use oil as both an insulator and for cooling. Under normal conditions the oil will contain assorted gasses such as C0, C02 and Hydrogen. As the oil ages or under fault conditions the oil can, over time, break down releaseing gasses. By measuring the gasses and the speed in which they are increasing we can work out what, if any, fault is going on in the transformer. A healthy transformer...

Day 3 - So what's that bit for?

Well, this wasn't going to be my day 3 subject but today has been a long day and time is short.

At power stations electricity is generated at one voltage then stepped up for distribution. The generator output is usually around 21kV. National Grid distribute at either 275kV or 400kV. DNOs go up to a maximum of 132kV. So, the generated voltage has to be stepped up to the distribution voltage. This is done via a (bloody big) transformer. So, how does then generator connect to the transformer...

Purpose of 110V 3 phase?

Hi,

I have taken over a design engineering job for industry.

The design is using a 400V/110V transformer. Usually, the 110V is single phase. However, in this case it is giving 110V 3 phase 32A.

The 110v 3 phase is for use with 4P 110V socket to run a pump.

Being in the UK, I am used to seeing 110V single phase for this application.

Can someone explain why the 3phase option will have been chosen instead?

Any diagrams will be welcomed.

Thank you

If you can't split a circuit?

I am a retired electrician and I've been out of the game for a while. My son asked me a question the other day and I wasn't too sure how to answer it so thought you lot might.

He wants to use rails to supply 5 modules, each module will have 40 small actuators that operate at 24VDC at 0.9As. Normally I said he would split each module up into a separate circuit with each one on an RCBO but as they are all attached to the one rail he can't do that. Is the only option to have a huge RCBO...

What do you think? DC 1A rating??

I have been asked/invited to "post more", lol, so let me make another post right away.
I thought of sth worthy to post, of interest to many, I hope I found sth on the quick...

The photo is just to illustrate the switch I'll be talking about. What's visible, I did long ago, serves me well: power switching is reliable and safe, that's how I like it. ✅
So, again, the relevant part of the photo is just the switch display: the first ... let me count ... 4 images, counted from top left...

Eng tech/IET registration

Hello

Ive been working for over 20years, done design course and fully qualified.

Looking into the professional registration with the Engtech from the IET, just wondering if anyone else has done it and what opportunities it resulted in?

I'm currently a QS for a small firm and heavily involved in design and quoting for them. I am competent in controls and process controls.

Just asking if its worth going down this road and if anyone can give tips and help...

Research interview questions - advice on Wireless Charging

Hello, I need to conduct interviews with experts in the relevant field for my university project. The topic and product that I’m developing a business plan for is a device that charges household appliances wirelessly – a Wireless Multi-Device Charging product. Could you provide me with your expertise in this field by answering a few questions about my idea?

I am looking for any experts in the electrical engineering field, as well as manufacturers, retailers and consumers to answer some of...
