Help a sparky out..... lead pipes!

Hi Chaps and Chapesses, just jumping over from the Sparky forum for some advice!

The short version is that I need a crash course in lead pipes, in Scotland, in private rental, in a listed flat, above a cafe. And here's why....

My good lady OH owns a place in Scotland which has been rented out ever since she foolishly decided to jump ship and move in with me down in the wilds of the West Country years ago. It's a 'upper villa' (what I'd refer to down south as a Maisonette) type property so...

Vent pipe connection to soil pipe

Following the recent installation of a bathroom, I had a leak causing damage in the room below caused by a partially decoupled vent pipe connection to the soil stack. It was likely unsettled by the installation. My insurance company have refused the claim on the grounds that the flexi bend connection is 'defective', a substandard fitting to the soil stack. The connection has been there since at least 1993 with no issue. I would appreciate expert option as to whether a flexi pipe connection...

TRV Head Identification

Hi all,

Would be grateful for your help in identifying the TRV head in the photos.

Have tried fitting a Drayton RT212 (M30 x 1.5), but while it almost fit, the new head seemed slightly too small to gain purchase on the valves's thread.

Thank you!

Thermostatic Valve

Evening all,

I have a radiator that is not working properly. There is heat to the pipe but only a slight warmth in the radiator itself. I have checked the valve and tried bleeding, no signs of air just cold water. In the old house I had similar and removed the thermostatic valve and freed up the pin. I was hoping to try the same on this one but am unsure how to remove it. Any advice please?
Thanks
Steve

Employer wanted

My name is Aidan. I'm 22 years old and have recently passed my Gas Safe ACS exams. I am looking for an employer. I started in the trade doing an apprenticeship, but sadly, the company I worked for had to cease trading due to unforeseen circumstances. I then used my savings to pay for a private training course to complete my training.

I have applied for some plumbing and heating jobs, but unfortunately, most companies want 3 to 5 years of experience. I have around 2 years of experience...

New Combi replacing backboiler on one pipe system

I had British gas over to quote to replace my backboiler with new combi. All great and had it installed only later to find on this forum while looking for something else that the one pipe system is not ideal for new combi.

Seems to work ok, but everyone is talking about the pressure and possible leaks. Piping is probably 50 years old, still looks ok and haven't had a major issue - most radiators seem to heat up but some a bit cooler.

Anyway, did British gas advise me wrong? should I call...

Ideal Logic boiler

I have an Ideal Logic boiler, and I noticed that the display screen does not stay on all the time. It only lights up when I change settings or when there's an error. However, a gas engineer who visited my home claimed that something was incorrectly connected because the display should stay on constantly.

From my understanding, the screen on Ideal Logic boilers normally turns off after a short period of inactivity, unless:

There is an active error code being displayed.

The boiler is in a...

Gloworm Ultracom 38CXI Hot water issue

Our combi boiler is having a very random issue.

When the boiler is on the DHW and CH mode the thermostatic shower and Bath mixer tap both drop in temperature after about 2 minutes of running, but when the boiler is on just the DHW mode the shower and the taps run totally normally.

We have previously changed the heat exchanger and the diverter valve in the last 2 years as well as the PCB board about 4 years ago.

Any ideas of what it could be would be much appreciated?

Thanks...

Hot water demand effect on central heating for Combi boiler

Hello,
We’ve recently moved into a fairly old, fairly big detached house (i.e. fairly draughty, but not too bad by any means) with a fairly new well maintained Worcester combi boiler. We weren’t convinced the heating was working right and then got hit with a £610 energy bill for the first 6 months! Anyway, after some investigation we have found:
The Central Heating “seems” to work fine. The CH water flow temperature can be viewed directly in the display. When the CH kicks in, you can see the...

Pipes vibrating

Evening all,
Some advice please. I went round to a customers home to do a few small jobs.
One I just can’t cure.
When the cold water is running the pipe around the house vibrate. It’s a newish build property and is mainly poly pipe running through joist and in walls. The flooring is large sheets of OSB/Chipboard with no access points. When the water has been off for a period of the time, they noise seems to disappear for a few days and then returns.
The cold water has pressure reducing valve...

Old primus gas bottle, can you still get refilled or exchanged?

From my old plumbing days, I still have an old primus gas bottle, (340g) with the screw in brass top, with the adjustable burner, that is now almost empty.
Was mainly used for soldering copper pipes/fittings.
Despite being old I do still use it on occasion, for a bit of soldering, paint removal, etc.
I think I got it refilled (or exchanged) a few years back, but can't seem to find anyone that does these now.
Does anyone know if these can still be refilled or exchange the empty bottle for a...

Vaillant f27 ecoTEC plus 837 F27 code

Hello all.

Had a call out this morning to water dripping from under boiler. Found to be a split expansion vessel - the outer metal case had split on joint at bottom and was dripping out quite badly / water inside boiler. No fault codes. Replaced expansion vessel refilled system etc. Attempted to turn on and got F27 code. Fault guide says that this is incorrect flame. I have isolated boiler / made safe etc and am going back on Monday now to sort out. I am going to speak to Vaillant technical...
