what about getting a local sheet metal fabricator to plasma cut you a peice of metal to the right shape and size. nice neat edges and flexible. Could use stainless so it nice and shiny on the back as well.

Or Alluminium which could also be polished or brush finished

50mm thick Polystyrene sheet - light to carry, cuts easy to wave shape, and you can skim the face first with a fast set flexible white adhesive.
Once the shape is cut - repeat skim on edges and tile 50mm thickness as well.
On the back if you want extra support fix your hessian mosaic cloth using same method of adhesive skim.
Whatever backing you finally choose 2mx2m is a big area to transport!
Its looking good!:drool5:

could possibly do this with say for or 5 10mm polystyrene laminated together with hessian and all bonded using a contact adhesive to stick it all together. the hessian would add stability and flexural strength

haven't got a clue about a backing board Gisella, just thought I'd say its, 'blooming' great piece of work.

All good ideas, as far as looks go perspex and stainless steel or aluminium... weeelll, that just makes my mouth water, Ajax!!! Yum.. :hurray:
The hessian backing to styrofoam had never occured to me either, (glad you like it, John 🙂 hmm, interesting, I used 50mm styrofoam to insulate my studo shed and had styrofoam bits all over the place, so not sure how confident I'd feel cutting it to shape neatly enough though. That's probably where the foam board would come in again, I have a sample here and quite like the density of it. laminating the wedi or ply... hmm, wonder how that would compare with the ever so tasty brushed aluminium option, pricewise.. thank you all, keep em coming...

to cut the styrofoam you can use a hot wire knife to get really nice neat edges. Edges would remain relatively weak and prone to damage from impact so would need some sort of protection. Alternative best of both worlds alluminium foil backed styrofoam. Would need to be unbranded I guess as most have the brand stamped all over them. Also usually comes in maximum 8x4 foot sheets so would need a special order. Not sure if you could brush finish it or not but worth a try if you want it nice and light. I have used a very ultra sanding (180grit I think) wheel on my grinder for brush finish alluminium. Not done it for a while though. Gives a nice swirly brush finish. catches the light lovely.

swirly brush finish pattern might match your wave theme???

Blimey, Ajax, all good, all good and worth looking into, thank you! I reckon it will be between perspex and aluminium, if I can afford either. Hot wire to cut styrofoam, well, never knew that either... getting an education here! I want to combine various metals with mosaic in the future, so the alu would be in keeping with that theme... oh boy, SERIOUSLY exciting... my brain is going bananas..
