this job isnt to build the boxing as well i dont think just tiling i tiled 4m2 kitchen walls and 12 m2 floor thursday and came back friday to grout

I won't embarrass myself by saying how long it is taking me yet! But I costed it based on 3 days work - and if I took longer that was my learning curve. I'm just not sure if I ripped myself or not. However I want to get into bathroom fitting - not just the plumbing, so I think it is a good one to get stuck into.

I was pleased with the quality of my slow work - I'm now worried about the ady though! Greenstar says its suitable for domestic showers onto ceramic tiles. What ady would others recomend though, as I'm keen to learn and improve.

Thanks for all the quick feedback.

Don't think for a minute you are embarrasing yourself bud, we all had to start somewhere and like you say it's the quality that counts, for me adhesive choice would be bal single part flex.

Thanks Sean and John.

I'm using Bal Green Greenstar adhesive. Mostly onto the original very solid tiles except where the walls have been made good as most of the layout has changed. Using 6mm notched trowel in most areas and thin solid bed in the shower area.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Green Star is just flour & water !
Use White Powder Based Adheshive !

Quality is far more important than speed. Doing a job correctly which includes preparation as well as materials is even more important.

I never agree to tile on tile as there are too many variables.....

  • how many layers of tile are there
  • how well are the tiles fixed
  • what is the primary substrate
Above is just a few reasons not to do it.
However, if you are going to undertake a tile on tile job, you need to thoroughly clean the existing tiles with sugar soap. I prefer to score the surface of glazed tiles, too. Prime the surface with an appropriate primer, I tend to use Ardex P82 2 part primer. I would always use a flexible cement based adhesive such as Ardex X7G+ or Mapei Keraflex regardless of tile size. Make sure that you use a flexible grout too. Also, remember to offset grout lines as much as possible to ensure a safe bond.

Just for reference, ready mixed adhesives are not suitable for tiles that have a surface area larger than 300 x 300mm, although I would not recommend using ready mix on anything larger than 200 x 250mm due to drying times / issues.
