in my opinion, if you are concentrating on your speed, you neglecting your quality without you realising it?? thats not a critisism, because its natural to be curious about how you compare to a pro but some of the speed technques that go on, on site should be avoided..just focus solely on your technique of fixing and eventually you will get into a system which will provide a decent momentum..you can only go so fast if your doing the job correctly...speed isnt important on quality work, the finish is.
just price the job accordingly and you wont go wrong.......i have seen loads of tilers and plasterers who fill your head full of nonsence about how many meters they do in a day and when you see their work , you know why. speed comes naturally when your technique is second nature..

exactly. not been funny but the pics of the tiling in the kitchen earlier on in this thread on the walls looks pretty terrible.

hi sean, but thats a good thing you can be that honest with yourself because thats how you improve..if anybody tells you they are the finished article, well they are kidding themselves because you always find that the people who are at the top of their game in any profession are always looking to improve..

Why use a rapid set on such a large area? Surely, a standard set would give him more time to make accurate and tidy cuts?

I agree, a standard set would give a far longer open time which would give more time for accuracy. I was being a little too blinkered with the "What ady would others recomend though, as I'm keen to learn and improve." question. I tend to stick to rapid but mix it in smaller quantities and make any difficult cuts between mixes 😳

speed will come in due course, knowing where to start helps a lot, after doing the job for a while you wll start to get a second inkling, thats roughly where i will start from sort of thing.

i recently done a large job with uncalibrated sheera slate from tile giant, main room was 43m2 and me and my labourer laid that in a day inc cuts and grouted it the following day, all slate was sealed before laying and before grouting, was shattered at end, punter wanted recessed grout lines instead of flush

Hard to define a speed per metre in bathrooms sometimes with the probability of hitting a bad wall or awkward area. Would probably allow myself 3 days for such a job. Bottom halfs first day, tops and windows second day, then finishing off on the third day - hopefully at a decent hour. Would also be inclined to use cement based slow set adhesive to allow better hanging, bonding and drying times.

Thanks for all the tips everyone. I'd previously used smaller tiles before and only ever onto plaster, so a few firsts on this job for me.Will be definately looking into these recomendations for future jobs - cheers!

how does the tiling in my kitchen pictures look terrible sean fsy ? tiles are straight worked out for cuts well , grouts good , sillicones neat its exactly how the customer wanted the tiles that they bought and more importantly the customer was happy
