Hi all

I'm just about to start my downstairs toilet and will be boxing in a concealed cistern and waste pipes and then using kito metallic brick mesh mosiacs ( Gemini Metallic Kito . I haven't tiled using mosiacs before so would like some help and advise. My questions/queries are:

  • As these aren't standard small square mosiacs I'm guessing I should use a standard trowel rather than a mosiac trowl?
  • They are staggered in a brick mesh pattern so to cut a straight line at the start and end of the wall what is the best way. I can't score/snap and find nibblers untidy which just leaves the wet cutter. Is there a way of holding all the tiles on the matt in place whilst cutting in order to achieve a nice straight cut?

Any advise or helpful hints would be gratefully appreiciated as the tiles aren't cheap so can't afford any mistakes! Thanks in advance.

I'd personally use a grinder for this situation, I tend to find with mosaics like this if you put them through the wet saw, the water softens the glue and they come off the sheet. It's also worth mentioning that I've never come across a tile/mosaic such as yours that is put on the mesh perfectly and I always end up pulling them all off and fitting the pieces individually. I have a couple of pics somewhere, I'll see if I can find them for you.

I'm 99% certain that these are the tiles that you have linked to, it's 3 or 4 years since I fitted them but, I'm sure they were from Gemini. Every single piece was pulled off the sheet and put on individually, the spacing on the sheets varied from1-4mm and trying to get each sheet to lock into the next was impossible, lovely tiles, badly put together.

Thank you so much Bri great advise.

Hadn't considered a grinder, I've got an angle grinder would I need a specific cutting disc for it or would the standard one do the job?

Suppose in an ideal world the pattern would all slot together on the sheets. Good to know before I start, better allow a bit more time and mix up the adhesive in small batches!!

Pics look great Bri impressive work, let's hope I manage to end up with something similar!

As per Bri's advice about water from the wet saw compromising the tile mesh. I keep an old plastiplug 'wet' cutter on the van with a knackered blade in it. Its ideal for dry cutting (ie no water in the cutter) soft tiles / sheet mosaics if you only have a quick cut or small area to do..... for the record experience shows that this method makes a real mess of glass mosaic!
