Before i get it wrong i want to get it right!

Why not batten the wall that will take the 12mm HBB so that it will finish flush with the plasterboard when the HBB is fixed to it. Use self tapping concrete / frame screws through the HBB & battens into the brick behind.
 
this is what i was thinking, but im not confident that i can get the adjustment to get them level as i can with the d and d method, given that the brick work isnt that good.
 
Dave has given you the solution to your problem.
Dab a waterproof board on to the same thickness as your plasterboard.
Job done.

yes you can D&D PB .. and then tank that .. i assumed backerboard was the option.. but PB tanked is as well 100%
 
Hi again, backerboard was my option and u was going to tank the backerboard to be confident it would be waterproof. Is plasterboard tank would be ok I might use moisture board and tank that. Would that be ok??
