I need help about having advices on repair for the Bisazza Mosaic (1x1 cm paperback one) that is recently installed on a wall with some defects. The guy has failed during taking paper off and many tessarees started to fall. Those tessearees installed back but not smoothly like the others. Waited too long to take off the paper, so some grouts remained larger. Finally he grouted with Fillgel. After it dries up, some parts were not perfectly levelled (especially white colored portions are visible). I have some reserve material in hand and I would like to know if I could repair properly those defected parts by replacing with new ones. thanks in advance. piatro

Hi piatro, you will need to cut down to the original wall finish to avoid disturbing other tiles, use a fine diamond cutting blade inserted between the joints & avoiding the tiles to remain. Remove the old tiles & bed, because you have a firestop cut the knocking off will not unseat the good tiles, you may need to remove some of the existing grout too ,as needed to enable insertion of a small chisel, & reduce risk of area damage to good tiles.. Gently gently catches monkey :juggle:

I would cut out square section of mosaic, would run grinder not through the joint but through edge of the tile which will be replaced, bisazza mosaic joints is too small to fit angle grinder blade, so you might chip mosaic around, and yes clean the old adhesive up to the sub..
Hi Don .I've got a 1.5 mm diamond blade for these sort of jobs..But I take your point..

yes mate do as the other guys have said work in square patches, clean out down to the substraight, put back patches and beat flat with a rubber trowel soak off paper then wash off the gum residue on the mosaic then grout !!good luck

Am I getting this wrong? I thought the problem was just sloppy individual tesserae + related adhesive and grout areas to be cleaned up and replaced? 1cmx1cm is pretty tiny... requiring a really fine tipped tool... and yes, I would use a grout float to level...

Beyond the some individual tessaraes (not so many), i'm thinking to replace a bigger area (4-5 sqft on one side, 3-4 sqft on the other). So, under the light of many advices, i'll take off the area inclusiv adhesiv, i'll create a smooth surface which will be ready for new mosaic tiles. Instead of diamond blade, could I use some n-cutters to make a separation line?

Piatro, use a Dremel tool with the option of various suitable tips, perfect for the job, especially with the flex shaft attachment, you can work piece by piece, quickly and acurately
Thanks for your advice Mosaic Girl but I'm not familiar with this tools. As I study a bit your works, you look pretty professional with mosaic (they were great). Could you give me more details about these tools?

All you have to do is get a hot air gun to soften the filgel (not too hot), making it easy to remove tesserae without damaging the surrounding ones. The surrounding filgel wont discolour with the heat. Filgel is similar to an epoxy grout, drying very hard and thats the only way to remove it.
Its what Bisazza recommend and it works a treat. Luckily you have some of the original batch left, otherwise if they have to order another batch from Italy theres a high chance the colour wont match.
