Also, look at a floor to see if it has been lifted before any cuts across the boards, screws fitted where nails used to be, new fittings/radiators/towel rails.
The tell tale sign are there for you to read. I once lifted a section of floor and found the client had cut grooves in the underside of the floorboards to allow for radiator pipes, had I screwed into it even 10mm would have pierced a pipe.

We all have bad days mate - Saturday was mine wasn't happy with 2 tiles laid the day before so decided to remove them and put more adhesive behind to pack them out level as the walls were all over the place. The tiles pulled the plasterboard off behind and I was left with a hole 600 x 450 and bare breeze blocks not what you want at 4 oclock on a friday afternoon.

Ended up cutting out replacing plasterboard (plumb and flat this time) and re-tiling the next day so just to say it happens to us all.

as they say mate **** happens and we live and learn from it, now i just ply with screws, dont remove tiles, and let them get someone else in if not happy lol
