I've learnt over the years how to give diplomatic answers( also known as convincing lies) to customers who have clearly no taste or clue regarding colours or workmanship. You know when that point comes when you're asked what you think of the finished look. Some of my replies are ' I didn't think those colours would work together but now I see it finished they do' or ' I really thought your kitchen had been professionally fitted' or my favourite ' most people are scared to be flambouyant but not you and it's really paid off.'

Get used to putting your pencil down in the same place so the fairy's don't keep steeling it and laugh at you while you look for it, by the time you find it your forgot what you wanted it for and miss something. I've wasted a good hour a day at times when I've only had a couple of pencils knocking about, so it might be worth getting a big pack of them and keep them on the van ready sharpened!

Don't be afraid to walk away from a job when a customer just doesn't get why the price is what it is. That type of customer is probably just after cheap, and if you're not a bodge it, you wont be the cheapest. If they don't understand why the price is what it is, then you've either not done a good job of explaining, or if you know you have, the customer isn't your type of customer and it's best to let some bodge it get the job and wait for the bathroom or kitchen to come back around a few years earlier than it should do.

If you get a lot of sales calls during the day, leave a suitable answer machine message thing asking customers to leave their contact details in a way salespeople don't feel welcome to, perhaps a "hi this is X tiling, if you're looking for a tiling quote or information regarding your job, please leave a message after the tone and I'll get back to you asap, thankyou".

Salespeople should be less likely to leave a message as they'll assume you wont get back to them. Gives you a bit more time on the current job, and you can call customers back when you're having your snapping.
