Hi Scott
After looking at your pictures the only option for you is to replace the whole job - I say this on the grounds there was definately no level used, as far as I can see. to take out individual tiles would not repair that job because to put one in properly, would make the next one look twice as bad. Also I suspect the adhesive used was powdered form this would lead to the damage that you have stated in removing individual tiles on a plasterboard wall. There is no way a tiler with 30 years experience would do so much damage with quality goods - I am a self trained tiler through experience of working with other tilers - every job I do is done as if its my own house and if I made a mistake, in a persons house, I would repair it out of my own pocket as a matter of principle - your tiles are overlapping at joints, they are slipping, to try and rectifiy individually would be near impossible and for your own peace of mind - end your so called tilers services, and get a proper tiler in - by the way my teenage daughter was shocked at the pictures - even she can do better than that when she helps me at the weekends!!!!!

Interesting thread this (comiserations to the thread starter).
Let me ask though - how many days do you think this would take - assuming no more than usual prep required? The reason I ask, is that I've finished a similar style which took me 2 days more than I quoted for as I spent almost two days in prep. (but I quoted enough so I was happy!)

I think that quality designs like this, naturally require quite a bit more care and attention. Fortunately my customer had been quoted nearly half my quoted price by three other tilers. This fact alone won me the job.
My customer was happy, but it took some effort!

I think we've all come across customers who expect to pay the same for these types of installations as they would for a standard 6x6 ceramic job with plastic trims etc, not appreciating the preparation and attention to detail required.

(edited for crassness!)

Dear All

AN UPDATE!

The chap turned up, on time, and essentially admitted fault with it all.

We asked if he'd looked at the photographs (we posted a separate link for him) - he said he hadn't. We asked why, and he said that he was more interested to see the things for himself.

We pointed out the faults. He couldn't, and didn't, argue. He didn't appear shocked by them, and he said that he would redo the floor and the plywood wall and cover the cost himself. We told him that we couldn't replace the bad tiling on the plasterboard walls as the walls would come away, so we were stuck with them.

We asked when he would come back to fix this, and he said "Hopefully next week, you'll have to arrange it with my wife who deals with my diary." All very non-committal. We asked if we'd get more than 2hrs each day and told him how we thought he'd overcommitted and lost interest in this job in preference for other jobs he was on. He said "Possibly."

But we don't want him back! We pointed out the cut edges in the floor, by the mirror, and along the top of the bath panel - all places where we could be cut by the sharp edges, and he said "Oops, must have put those tiles in the wrong way." We then asked him directly if he'd used a spirit level on the floor. He said "No." I asked if he had one... he said "Of course I have."

"Then why the hell didn't you use it?!"... to which he had no reply. "If you're happy to cut all these corners, why should we want you back? How could you make all these mistakes and just hope we wouldn't notice? Understandably our confidence in you is completely shattered."

He said he could understand that. We reminded him that we'd asked for badly cut tiles we spotted on his first day to be swapped out... and by the end of the week they were still there... we told him that by then they'd set fast and pull the wall away if we try to remove them. Therefore, we'd already given him the chance to put early mistakes right... and he chose not to. We also showed him how our untrained joiner had done better cuts than he had, to which he could say nothing.

We asked if he had Public Liability Insurance... "Of course I have," he replied.

So we're going to go down that route.

We're taking as many tiles out this weekend as we possibly can, and our new tiler is coming in next weekend to sort us out.

Next update, we'll let you know how the tiles come off!

THANK YOU ALL, AGAIN.
Scott

UPDATE>>>

Didn't get round to taking the floor up yesterday, but have just done it.

20 minutes. The tiles popped off. The adhesive had barely stuck to the back of them! The latex screed has mostly flaked underneath, and so we're basically back to where we started with the floor.

TILES HAVE BEEN SAVED!!!

Interestingly, the tile with the cut inwards into the floor... the one he said he must have just put it in the wrong way round... it was cut both sides. So he knew full well what he was doing. On that basis, I think we've got every right to not want him back to correct his mistakes as his work was essentially negligent - and unsafe!!

News as it comes,
Scott
