We start house bashing for a contractor on Monday.

Haven't done this since 2004 when we did Battersea Reach for St George.

We are starting with the Town Houses, so will post some pictures - they are high end.

Best Wishes

Anne

As promised I have posted a few pictures of this project,

I am mentally knackered just reading this thread. All that meterage in a single day is very impressive. I'm sticking with domestic and they are mostly in loft extensions. Two flights of stairs etc. I can just about manage 12sqm in 2.5 days (maybe 2 at a push), but that's working around all the other trades too. Thanks Deno for sharing your skill with us. At 48 (49 tomorrow!) I will never never never reach a quarter of your speed. The main thing from this thread is that you are happy.

its funny if you had said to me 12 months ago i would be back on the house bashing and loving it i would have said you was mad. i was loving the freedom and the kudos of the high end domestic side, but to be totally honest the game is a bit of a minefield at the moment and every one wants to blame the fixer for everything that may go wrong. there is a lot to be said for domestic work and i have respect for the people that get involved in that side of the trade as i know full well how it all takes time and a substantial amount of effort to keep the client happy and playing the game. for me i have lost interest in playing that game and am finding a new enthusiasm for the site work. The pace is faster but there are reasons for that. You can fix a lot more in a day on site than you can on domestic work but this is reflected in the price so it is swings and roundabouts financially. if you are happy in your work it is all good.

Deano I really am strongly considering following your lead and doing more commercial work as a sub contractor, I am trying to train a lad and dont feel I am giving him a fair go on my own work as most of it is quite varied and I think he would learn more quickly on repetitive work ,I also have a theory that you make more money as a labour only subbie than you do as a jobbing tiler supplying materials ,its been a while now how are you finding it and is there much of a difference in earnings levels ?

I am taking home 800-1200 per week and I am happy with that but the best thing is I have no stress other than making sure the plot is finished in time for the next trade. The work is good most of the time some of the house builders have some nasty plots as in not much tiling but all the hard walls and no floors but most are good. As I have said the site we have landed on has got good size plots and the potential to be a good earner. I am turning domestic work away that a couple of weeks ago I would have jumped at it. You never know I may get fed up of site work and long for the stimulation of explaining why I am insisting on tanking, ditra mat, sanding the floor, or the use of a certain type of adhesive but I can't see it at the moment .

Mr Tiler

LoL you are earning more than I was at your stage in the game I was on £25.00 per week

it will go up over time and I don't have the hastle of customers not paying etc just go to work and crack on, the perfect life ay lol at least for now as it could come to an end over night!

Good money Dean. Just shows that a fella knocking out a site in 3 days is better off than someone who spends a week faffing about in a domestic bathroom, and won't have a quarter of the hassle either providing there's a cheque handed out every Friday.
the money is not bad but it's a lot of fixing but that is ok with me we get paid every two weeks put your invoice in on Friday morning and the money is in the bank by Friday afternoon. Spot on every time.

money is all things mate... that payment every two weeks would and im sure is sufficient to any wage..... sure as hell beats fighting a tight *** over a few bathroom tiles! only thing I hate is the things that are acceptable which in a private house would not be I cant stand but has to happen!

A herd of wild horses wouldn't get me back on site. I love all the wheeling and dealing that comes with domestic work. And I can make good money on the supply of tiles. And I enjoy prepping jobs and varied work. Not doing the same thing day in day out.. but each to their own. .
