hi all just want to share.
was due to start a bathroom floor on the 8th june.
the original tiles had been dot and dabbed onto chipboard.
the customer explained that this was done by a tiler who quoted the cheapest price and that in hindsight this was possibly not the best option.
(hmmm). anyway the floor is 8m2 and needs all the old tiles removing and the floor sanding back to chipboard(the way that the addy came off with a gentle push from a scraper should not take to long.the toilet and wash basin are both the floating kind so no probs there. the floor itself was to be overlaid with plyboard 12mm was going to prime board and screed with thinset addy then screwed at 300mm intervals to give a good surface to tile on. tiles are 450 x 250 travertine, so seal and intensify, grout with ivory grout so white flex addy, clean and seal again. gave customer the quote broken down into materials and labour £400.00 in all, fine they say can you book us in. got a phone call this morning to say that they have had another tiler who can do it for half that price. Am i too expensive or is the world going to pot especially as the first job was so bad.:mad2::mad2::mad2:
comments greatly appreciated

Chris,

Leave the customer with your phone number and tell them to call you when the floor goes bad for a second time... Maybe they will have learnt their lesson by then

If they have gone with the cheapest option again then thats thier prob if it goes belly up again...You can have great pleasure in telling them so ....

If your price included addy etc then it was a good price..:thumbsup:and if someone has halved it then best of luck to the customer..

thxs grr they have it if they need it but it is so frustating and makes me wonder just how low people are prepared to work for.

I would point out to the customer that half your price seems a bit cheap. How can the other tiler find all the materials they need plus the labour costs for only £200???

That seems way too cheap for me! Especially if there is prep work to be done too.

all materials included dave addy grout sealer and ply. problem is work is short at the moment and struggling to stay afloat feel like a one legged duck just swimming in circles. get even more annoyed when all the pictures on rouges gallery so many cowboys taking our jobs and messing up giving tilers a bad name.

Your price was cheap.....especially as its a stone floor...

We are hearing more and more of bodge it and scarper traders , As you say there are loads out there..:mad2:

It sounds like you've been used for your knowledge and the'y're going to do it themselves...

Do any of you guys ever take a deposit to book work in? I mean like a small deposit £50 or so.

I can only think of two customers that have cancelled on me in 14 years, so I never have but I see it happens to you guys a lot and I’d be more than slightly upset if it happened to me.

I must say I very rarely get just tiling jobs (maybe 5 or 6 a year) as it's more of a trade I cover whilst fitting kitchens and bathrooms. Or is this problem just more rife in the tilling industry?

Oh by the way, Some people never learn:mad2:, If it was me I would approach the customer and say 'I wish you luck, and hope all goes well. But please be advised that if the floor is messed up for a second time, then the tiles may not be reusable as they are this time and as such may need to be re-purchased."

Can't believe the customer fell in to the same boat after the first job, won't they ever learn. As Dave said, I've heard so much of dot and dab on kitchen splashbacks recently. There've got your number so hopefully will give you a call when the job gets bodged for £200.
