dont worry mate have the same trouble here in northern ireland priced a bathroom 22 sq mtr addy grout all in £475 i thought that was reasonable guy said he was happy with that then phoned me the next day to say someone was doing it for £275 good luck another bodge job on the way ! when its too good to be true it usually is thats what i told him!:mad2:

Working in a shop I see things like this happen alot. I have seen 150sqm floors (Trav and not cheap trav) get ruined due to the customer wanting someone "cheap".

When they come begging back to you in 6 months to go do the repair job tell them its now £800.

Some people never learn, Ive a mate like this who had a couple of bathrooms done on the cheap, the pictures were in the rogues gallery I think.

oh this reminds me...

I had a call today from a potential customer asking for a quote on a floor, He was trying to get me to give a price over the phone and I said I'm afraid I couldn't as there are too many factors to take account of but I'd be more than happy to do a site visit. He then went on to say that he didn't want to spend much money and wanted it done on the cheap. So I changed tact and remained very friendly but said in all honesty there are plenty of firms that are cheaper than us and I even gave him some examples! I explained that we only do quality jobs and not quick fixes and went on even more on how to contact other people who could help him out.

I got off the phone and the lads were wetting themselves about how much I clearly didn't want the job, there were lost for words when I said he wants me to go and look at it on thursday:yikes:! It shocked me too but I must have been so honest that the guy must trust me already

Haha, that shows how it works when you explain the situation to customers.
Wished it would have been the same for Chris (CJ Ceramic) though. What a cheek that customer is. I really hope that you charge like double when he phone you to repair their second rogue job - THAT should teach them! If you want your hands on the job in that house at all... clearly they don't value quality.

And for the 22 sq mtr job for £475 - fair price I would say. Wouldn't go lower than that!

CJ, your price wasn't too high (imo), the customers are either trying it on or have landed very lucky, or going to get another bodge job. Don't match the price they claim to have been quoted or you'll resent doing the job:thumbsup:

If you speak to them again Chris, ask them if the other tiler have insurance for when it goes wrong, or guarantee their jobs - again for when it goes wrong. That should make them think. Not to mention asking what materials they will be using as it is an extremely low price and you would be concerned having it done in your own house...

thanks guys. i did feel that the price i quoted was fair for the work involved. have since spoken to the customer about the aspects of the job and they have said that the tiler disagrees that travertine needs sealing as it is a natural stone and has been open to the elements for 1000's of yrs (lol) i nearly spilt me beer. the new tiler that they have on the job says that i was trying to take liberties with the price by blinding them with technical rubbish. When i asked for the tilers name and number they diplomatically refused.
