if you wanted to employ a stone mason you went to the guild,if you were a time served mason you registered with the guild and were allowed to practise the trade
somewhere along the line it turned into the masons as we know them today
around 70,000 in the uk. they make a difference in lots of ways without the unititiated even knowing about it. £20million from the UK to charity in 2007. Often the first to respond to national and international crises including haiti, new orleans, 9/11, chinese earthquake along with loads of local charities.
I make no secret of my membership these days. It's never really done me any good in business apart from perhaps easing the wheels of conversation with people I come across in business who are in the order. At the same time it has done me no harm either. And I get a good feed......
