Mrs Smiths bathroom, not a 4 million pound house, just an everyday job in an everyday house, new tiler can do the job just as well to the eye as you can.... you still saying he shouldn't be allowed to work ?

just get properly trained by that i mean nvq standard at least, heath & safety and cscs would be an advantage
bathroom bashing is a very small part of the tiling industry important true but small

i started in 1962 aged 15 came out of my time in 1969 aged 21

Hav'nt you found that over the year's materials have changed which has made it easier for guy's to adapt to whatever trade so training can be shortened

I suppose a full apprenticeship was a big deal back then, but compared to now they simply don't exist like they did decades ago.

Now there are far more one and two man businesses compared to larger companies who took on apprenticeships.

Try finding many places now that offer apprenticeships ? and the way the general economics of this country has changed, young people have a far greater need to start straight into better paid work, and simply cannot live on the minimim wages they'd probably get on an apprenticeship.

But does it really take 7 years to become a good quality tiler, no, I don't think it does, but it is only really people that have served on a full length apprenticeship that seem to take the view that nobody should be allowed to work in our trade without doing so, which is what this forums really about, helping out the new guys into the world of tiling.

but a 2/3/4 week crash course cant be right
you have only to look at some of the questions asked on the general site

No, it's just a difference of opinion.

You did a full apprenticeship when they we're all the rage, I didn't, but I still turn out quality work and not one single complaint form anything I have ever done.

Now I fully agree there will be many new people out there turning out terrible quality work, but there will also be a lot of "time served" doing shoddy work too.

your totally missing the point
i,m not some old duffer that lives in the past
and ive trained quite a few lads that make a bloody good living in the trade
in this day and age 7 years is ridiculous i concore
as far as i know you can still enroll at your local building collage and do an nvq course in 16 weeks or there abouts and they will send you out on site working with the likes of me for a few weeks now isn't that the way forward

To a point I have to agree, I,ve done lime morter couses and the guy that done our training learnt his trade in france and, Yes, took seven years in his training and you could,nt shorten that type of work. I feel that your right in saying about some of the questions asked in the forum but most are backgrounds prep work. Lime morter is the biggest shortest to date for trades for listed buildings.
