Dom, in this day and age I have had lads offering to pay me to let them work with me. Not that I would take advantage, but how many lads out there would give anything to learn a highly skilled trade. We all know the rates a well respected tiler can command, we all started on poor pay.:smilewinkgrin:

Never had a problem Dave but he does need a shove now and again, he can tile a little, he can grout and he keeps the tools clean but why walk?
He has been put up to it by the new missus, they are over £1000 in rent arrears and have other debts that are really hers. I might call him tomorrow and arrange to see him away from her. His Mum just called and she is in bits saying its all down to his girlfriend, but how do you explain that to him??

If he's worth more than £220 a week to you then get him back, or would you rather spend 2 years training someone else? If you are still carrying him after 2 years and he costs you money then let him go

£350 for a second year apprentice is quite a nice sum. Was just about getting £200 in my final year.

As my old boss said when I enquired about a pay rise, "No son, if I give you one now then you'll not appreciate it next year". :lol:

That is a so familiar story Dom. My nephew had a good mechanics job, met a girl as above, she wanted him at home for fetching and carrying and the stupid lovesick idiot with first legover snydrome got the sack! They split up. He is now a traffic warden and she now has five kids, all different races!

I haven't read all the posts coz I'm on a time thing here atm,my view, if he's worth it to you, and if you make money from his employ, then yes, you could pay him his 'worth' if on the other hand he isn't making you more than his wage, then he's costing you money.

most training costs you money the 1st year, 2nd year to will break even , 3rd year you should make a profit , 4th to 5th year you will make good profit , if you can keep hold of them , so thats why i said you have in put in 2 years dont waste it if you can sort it out , if you want too ,
