just wanted to say advice and recommendations from tile shops (especially those who sell no stic),should not always be taken on face value.
me and little bro were told be said shop it was ok to stick some 70kg per m2 stone/slate on skim and plasterboard as long as we bonded it first.
point being tiler normally knows better than shop assistant.

Quite an interesting read this one.....

Dean, it's nice to see that even during tough times that a professional tiler is prepared to walk away from a job because he knows it's not right. There are a lot of people out there who would have stuck them up regardless.

Jacqui, hopefully you can go back to the supplier and get a refund on these tiles, I'm sure you can see from the replies that they are not suitable for the job. I'd also seriously consider ringing Dean to fix the replacements, I don't know him personally but I'm sure you'll agree he's proved his professionalism here by walking away and potentially saving you a lot of stress in the future when the job failed.

BS5385 2.3 Mosaics.
Mosaics are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, in glazed and unglazed ceramic, glass and marble.
To facilitate ease of handling, mosaics are assembled as sheets, the individual tessera being glued either
face side down to paper (paper-faced mosaics), or bed side down to synthetic mesh, or to small tabs.

Paper-faced mosaics allow full contact to be achieved with the bed, i.e. mortar or adhesive. When sheets
are assembled by means of a backing material it should be made of synthetic fabric, not of cotton or paper.

For a mosaic which has been assembled with backing fabric or tabs it is essential that:

a) the fabric or tabs and their adhesive should not occupy more than 25 % of the area of each tessera. The
critical factor is the contact of the adhesive over the backs of the tesserae;

Alternatively you could find someone who is prepared to fix them and end up ripping them all down again when they fall off in 3,6,12 months time?

If the shop or the manufacturer are prepared to state in writing they are prepared to guarantee them and the installation in your wet room then crack on finding someone who will install them and get them in.

I bet they won't guarantee it. To be perfectly honest even of they did I wouldn't install them. I couldn't live with myself if one fell of and injured someone underneath just because I knew the shop or company had put in writing that they'd be ok because I really don't think they will stand the test of time.

Jbrooks you've had advice on here from some of the best tilers I know with exceptional technical knowledge of the trade. You'll find examples of Dean, Gary and daves work all over this forum. You can check out the calibre of their work and I'm sure you'll agree these are experienced tilers that are not the sort to shy away from a difficult challenge so if they advise you there is an issue with your tile choice then I for one would listen. By all means contact porcelanosa but make sure you seek advice from their technical departments not the sales staff. Maybe they can come up with a good reason why their backing methods does not need to comply with recommended British standards and hopefully they will put that in writing to you.

Good luck with your project:thumbsup:
