I'd say the verbal contract was for tiling only, and now the job has grown 50% in size, so will the bill, and the time it's going to take to finish the work.

Get the work done, give him the bill, if he refuses to pay for all of it..... well lets say there are many different ways to get someone to change their mind over not paying you for no real reason.

Good luck

never again sorted the guys bathroom out took the tiles of the walls cleaned them up took the plaster of the walls then boared up it took me just over 3 days now he tells me ive took to long to finish the job and he wants it all done for sunday night told him no chance i told him it would take 3 to 4 days to tile the bathroom before i started the job and i would charge him day rate he told me he would take all the tiles off the walls then i could start but when i got there monday they were still on the walls so i spent all day taking them off now he telling me he will only pay me for 4 days as i told him thats how long it would take to tile hes taking the pee now what can i do he wont pay me until the jobs finished and wants to knock my price down to what he thinks its worth I'm not being funny but this guy is Asian Ive done 1 other job for an Asian guy in the past & he was exactly the same tried knocking my price down at the end of the job what can i do apart from knocking him out & getting nothing
superglue the locks on his shop so he cant open up i would also be kicking him around the front street until he pays

Hi Howard, I'd walk or as gaz advises, I know you are owed money but at this rate your going to be owed a lot more and he will be on your case thruout, It's a life experiance and he won't find it easy to get someone else in to repair other people's work. Believe me your not the first and you won't be the last to work for this kind of idiot.

One of the main reasons that I have with going full time tiling is the area I live in which is 11% Asian. I have not got a problem with Asians in the usual dealings with them where it is the other way round such as shop owners, taxi drivers and so on, in fact the local curry shop we are on first name terms. It comes as no surprise though from Howards post that he has had problems with them trying to push the price down either during the work or on completion.
I recently went to quote a kitchen wall. Turned up at the address given and the door was opened by an Asian guy in his later years. After some initial confusion as to why I was there I was told that his son who had arranged the quote was not there and was invited to wait for him to return. Inside I was told the work was not at that address. After 10 uncomfortable silent minutes I decided to leave, with the opinion if he could not be there at the arranged time what would it be like getting payment. I don't want to be a steriotype but it is not the first time I have heard of them wanting something for nothing and it makes me wonder how to handle it should I be asked to quote in the future. :huh2:

Had the same problem just before x-mas as Tom. turned up at the house and the area to be tiled was about 37m2. Mixed floors and walls. Told me he had atiler in early who quoted £400 with mats included. Just laughed and said i would go with him as mats alone would be about £200-£250. He asked me still to quote so i said £650 and that was me knocking about £100 off the price for him.figured about a weeks work. Still tried to get me down in price but i wouldn't have it. Said he'd go with me. Started me thinking mmm £400 to £900 am i going to get paid. He wasn't living in the house so had no idea where he stayed. Then phoned me up to tell me Terracota tiles in kitchen with ufh. Told him that would be another £250 on the price and he agreed to easily. Decided not to do it as had a feeling i was going to get bumped. Maybe i was wrong but had that gut feeling.

As long as you have other work to do I don't blame you for walking. The question is what do you do if the customer is unwilling to give you what you quoted on completion, is it worth taking a hammer to your work so they have to shell out for tiles again as well as someone to fix. Be interested to know what people have done if they have been refused payment.
Maybe Dan should set up an anominous forum!

What like the tilers forums arms...that,s out of the publics gaze.....

I once went to a job where they wanted 4 rooms and a stairwell plastering. As I was doing this around my regular job I expected it to take 2-3 weeks and I didnt want to wait that long for my lolly so I asked if I could get paid after each room. they agreed and thats what they did. even gave me a £20 tip at the end.
So if the customer looks a bit dogey you could try that one on them, that way at least the worst that can happen is you wont get paid for the last days work
