Remove plinths for tiling a floor?

some tilers Should be ashamed of themselves. So you don’t fit backer board or SLC or patch walls or cut architrave or fit UFH or install tanking. When you have a floor that needs strengthening how do you cope if you cant even cut a plinth. I have heard some rubbish spouted in my time but this is just pathetic.

difference is dean all the prep you do for tiling is covered up so it isn't an issue, yes I can patch a wall for tiling but I couldn't plaster a wall to a perfect finish same as a pro would ...I can knock up a bit of boxing in that needs tiling, just don't feel comfortable plaining doors etc, that are going to be on show..

What makes you think you can't cut oak with a handsaw? Oak has been used as a building material for hundreds of years what do you think they used then?

Don't chop away at anything, saw the bottoms off, then take the aris off with a small bit of sandpaper.

I don't know Rob, I've never tried. I suppose that's my point entirely, I've never done it and the reason for that is, I don't know how, as I've just proved by thinking a handsaw wasn't suitable 🙂

I have no need to be ashamed my friend and i dont think a lot of other tilers have to be neither, also i dont see anyone saying that they cant cut a plinth down, i have said i am a wall & floor tiler been doing the job 43 years i do what it says on the tin,not saying i cant do it, look up what a tradesman is,i tell the customer it is to there benefit by getting the proper tradesperson in then i know in my own mind i am not ripping anybody off by taking a lot longer than the proper trade concerned, iwouldnt go to car showroom and ask for a meat pie ,just saying

no disrespect meant at all when I say this brian but how many jobs have you potentially lost by doing this? if you need to get another tradesman in is that not going to put the customer off most of the time? cheers

plinths on older style kitchens before adjustable legs don't come of there fixed with dowels you can tell because the plinth is the same length as the unit and not one long length

and i dont agree with you Colour Republic,a tiler is a tiler and should be fixing tiles,an odd jobber is one that thinks they can do the lot but has no real trade, myself i am a tiler and that is what i do ,but back to the question asked ,i would give the customer the choice of having them cut down or tile up to them, better to have them cut down imo if there are pipea behind them that may need to be got at, no offence meant with my comment but there are to many people trying to do other trades jobs and in the end the customer ends up paying a lot morein the long run ,and in a lot of cases abotched job to go with it ,i have looked at two of theese jobs today done by a jack of all trades

You deal with cutting tiles and tolerances all day with tiles..it doesn't need a chippie to remove plinths and run them down wirh a small saw..even a hand saw will do it..don't get the negativity..help the customer..charge them an hours work if need be..who's going to come out and cut some plinths down..not worth the diesel !

I've never lost a job because I haven't trimmed a door or plinth. Funnily enough, customers employ me to stick squares and rectangles to things, not make alterations to their wood work. I have a joiner who I recommend or get him to pop over for an hour and do anything that's needed.

I'm actually surprised that a few folk here have never trimmed a door or plinth. Wow
