I didn't think there are joists in a floating floor ? I thought it was floating,ie onto kingspan onto bison beams or something of the sort !

Well when I typed in floating chipboard floor in google images there were diagrams of the chipboard with joists underneath thats why I asked the question could you just screw the chipboard down to the beams below to make the floor solid enough to tile on!

God knows then,I've always thought floating floors had no joists, just insulation and something like caber flooring floating on top! It's what they called it anyway on all the sites I've worked on.
A floor with joists and boards on top were just called ,well, floors,I don't know why they would lay boards over joists and not screw/nail em,daft really

I was thinking that myself tbh mate doesnt seem to make much sense unless the chipboard is easily weakened by have screws put through it

yes, tiled on chipboard using bal fast flex and wide joint bio microflex. no problems.

checked that the floor was deflection free, and mixed and laid the addy carefully, and bedded the tiles properly.

pity that thread got closed and not allow the diy'er to update. I've little doubt the tiling is still OK. that thread has had nearly 14,000 hits.

Thanks for your reply Ythan, but you didn't answer my question, "are you a tiler?" if so what are your qualifications? if you don't mind me asking, I am always interested to know why people would give bad advice on a pro tilers forum. Your experience and background would really intrigue me.

I will gladly share mine with you. Please do respond to this as I am trying to understand your reasons for thinking that chipboard is under any circumstances a suitable substate to receive any type of tile.

I will stick my two bobs worth in,

Bal FastFlex (Elastomeric) states on the bag that you can tile direct onto chipboard.

I for one would never ever tile direct to chipboard, not even with fast flex.

It must be over boarded 1st, Hardie etc.
