Electrical Advice

Ring final circuit results.

Hey guys as some of you will know I'm studying electrical installation at York college.

I've been trying to get some practice in with my MFT.

My results were for the ring circuit.
r1. 0.65
rn. 0.65
r2 1.06

Sockets. I was getting in the range of 0.31 ohms and 0.33. I had to open the sockets up to check with positive abd negative probe. I'm sure my tutor said I could use the plug that is supplied with my MFT 1720 tester. But that wouldn't do it. Kept getting great than 999 with that.. so...

Life after Napit/NICEIC?

I'm a good few years from retirement (aged 52), but I am slowly winding down my hours.

One of the things I dislike is the yearly assessment. It always goes absolutely fine, and I know it always will, however It's a stressful couple of hours, plus a stressful few hours/days leading up to it. Not that stressful, but enough to think about avoiding it.

My question is, how did any of you guys find it after leaving your registering body?

Pity Tel isn't here......

EV Pod cable (not charging cable) running close to hot tub.

Hi;

In order to install an EV Charging point at the rear of our Garden for the Odd Designated parking bays we have, the reinforced cable for such would have to run the length of the Garden - where there is a hot tub Present.

Do these cables need to be x metres away from Hot Tubs? I'm getting Herbie Geebies about it visibly running immediately next to it - or is that ok? If it has to run close, is burying it an option?

(FWIW, the Hot Tub is a 13amp type, and we don't even plan on running...

New induction hob require 2x16A fuse. Can I connect it to the existing socket please?

Those are the pictures from new hob. It require 6mm cable according to the plate info. Current hob is hardwired through 6mm cable too. Fuse at the fuseboard is 32A shared for oven and hob. Does it mean that fuse in the main fuseboard need replacing for 2x16A and then perhaps oven to be on a separate one? Just trying to get the idea of much...

Mechanical ventilation commisioning cert.

I've fitted a couple of in-line fans in an office refurb which are for a toilet and a shower just like I have done many times in the past over the years. Because of the extensive refurb/alterations that have gone on there is a building inspector overseeing it and he has sent this to the main contractor as one of the outstanding issues.

Whats all that about then, it says ventialltion system but that to me is a massive load of ducts running up and down a big new skyscraper like John McClain...

Worst board in the world

I fitted some pretty naff stuff over the years but this one has to be the worst I've come across yet. Obviously quite a few year old now and not helped by the way it has been installed either but its so badly designed its left me baffled.

The neutral bar is only one one side, buried deep under all the cables that have to run past it, why oh why not put one neutral bar on each side, same goes for the earth bar. Also there are nowhere near enough ways on the bars for the potential number of...

Yet another van break in!

Not posted for a while. Van broken into, last time was a few years ago, and since then always taken my tools out at night.
They got in (Transit Connect) pushed it back from against the wall into the middle of the road, pulled the strong box out the side door and made off with it. The box was empty fortunately, the main problem is they have stuffed the ignition barrel so I can't get the key in. Hope the comp insurance will fix it, unbelievable what they will do.

Lift supplys

Hi guys hoping someone can clarify something for me. Basically I’ve been asked to fit new SWA from a fused isolator to a new rotary isolator in a lift shaft. I don’t know if I can do it based on my quals (18th edition, part P, level 3 test inspect) and that I’m not NICEIC registered yet for myself as I work for a company under their registration. I’ve been told a minor works certificate is required but don’t want to fall foul if it is notifiable work. Has anyone got any advice with regards...

Fire alarm panel. Don’t recognise fault code

The big stately home I’ve been working in has an EMS 5096 alarm system with over 100 detectors and 3 (that I know of) panels.
All detectors are battery powered and radio back to its closest panel. All panels are also radio linked together.

They get the odd fault code which is usually a flat battery. They can change the battery’s and reset the system themselves… but the other day they got a message that won’t reset.
The screen says fault and something like “Radio Net 03”

From what I’m...

First visit , Bungalow question.

Hi, first visit and hopefully I get this question in the right forum (advise if I have got it wrong please) and is appropriate for this site. I do have ancient electrical qualifications - C&G 232 pts 1,2 +3. but my experience is more commercial appliance and have very limited domestic installation, .Anyway, my question is I'm looking at purchasing a dated bungalow with tired electrics, also has had the consumer unit moved into the lounge. Problem is, I'm unsure if it has a concrete floor but...

Lights Flickering when turning on at different switch

Hi, wondering if anyone could help me. The main light in my kitchen works off two different switches, one on either end of the room. One of the switches is a 3 gang switch which also connect to some spotlights and outside lights.
When turning on and off at one switch it is fine, but then if you go to turn the lights on with the opposite switch the lights flicker until you turn them off and on again with that same switch. I have checked the sockets for loose connections and checked the bulbs...

A MYSTERY? 24VDC blowing fuses

As the title suggests; I have a fuse that is blowing on a 24VDC circuit.

I was worried I had damaged the servo motors as they cost a bomb.

the motors, I connect and disconnect at the BNC point on the diagram.

I plugged them in and it was blowing fuses. I tried 1a 2a 4a (4 amp is ample).

I thought it was a motor that was blown and causing a surge. I then swapped them over left and right and they both work.
I then realised I had plugged them the wrong way around but there should not be a...
