Do you think then solar boom is over for existing properties? Discussion ThreadDo you think then solar boom is over for existing properties? Electrical Advice

I think I'm right in guessing that most of the grants have stopped long ago when it comes to adding them to your existing property?

So does that mean the solar boom a decade back has fully stopped these days?

Any grants and things to add them to new properties? Or would you just be buying a house with them already on these...

Ryefield Board Electrical Advice

Ryefield Board Discussion ThreadRyefield Board Electrical Advice

Hello all.
I have been asked to fit a Ryefield board and switch-fuse on an existing 3 phase supply so that a shop can have its own meter and 3 additional meters are going to be installed for future flats above the shop.
All of these are currently on 60a switch fuses.
Have spoken to UKPN and they are only down to upgrade the existing fuses to 100amp, the connection of the Ryefield and meters is to be carried out by...

Ferrule for triple solid core CPC in socket w/metal back box Discussion ThreadFerrule for triple solid core CPC in socket w/metal back box Electrical Advice

Ancillary to my other post, I wanted to check if something was up to standard in part of the installation I'm doing.

We have a metal back box in this case. I've got a fly lead going to the face plate, which has the two other CPC cables going to it also. I've not been happy with how sturdy the connection is if I use 3 solid core...

What LED failure rate is acceptable? Electrical Advice

What LED failure rate is acceptable? Discussion ThreadWhat LED failure rate is acceptable? Electrical Advice

Hi,

What do people consider is an acceptable failure level for LED bulbs?

I have two examples, both from TLC "LEDLite" home brand lights.

1st, I fitted 6 of their 8W filament LED bulbs with 2 years guarantee in my parents house, and 3 have failed within the first year. (50% failure in half the guarantee period)

2nd I fitted 45 “LED Fire Rated Downlight” lamps (all in one...

Ethernet cable problem

Hello, I have a 400mbps internet contract. When I plug my Ethernet cable into the modem->straight into my laptop I get my 400mbps. When I plug my Ethernet cable into one of the outlets trough the house I only get a 100mbps. All the cables are CAT6 and I’ve tested all of them. When I use them straight out of the modem they just give 400mbps. Speed & duplex is set to auto negotiation.
I would...

E-stop Electrical Advice

E-stop Discussion ThreadE-stop Electrical Advice

Good morning all, just after a wider view on this,

we have a large control panel which allows the company to test motors on. This allows the company to verify the condition of the motor after repairs. The motors are connected to the test panel by a series of sockets from 16a up to 500a outlets, the company then has test leads with the correctly selected cable for that outlet, the test cable has a plug on one end, and the other end is...

How do I wire a 3-way Zooz Zen21 smart switch? Electrical Advice

How do I wire a 3-way Zooz Zen21 smart switch? Discussion ThreadHow do I wire a 3-way Zooz Zen21 smart switch? Electrical Advice

The following dead-end 3-way wiring diagram shows my current setup with the Zooz Zen21, but it's not working. This wiring works fine with a simple standard paddle 3-way switch that doesn't require a neutral wire. However, since the Zooz switch requires a neutral wire, I ran a white wire from the capped neutral wire from the breaker and the light switch to...

Is my rewire price in the right area? Discussion ThreadIs my rewire price in the right area? Electrical Advice

Hi guys, I’m just trying to price a rewire and I think my price is fair considering the specs of the job plus he wants 2 consumer units, 1 cu for downstairs as he and his wife will downstairs and 1 cu for upstairs which he will turn into a flat. I just want to get other opinions if I'm close to how they would price.

All materials supplied and fitted for now, he did mention...

Balcony solar in Ireland Electrical Advice

Balcony solar in Ireland Discussion ThreadBalcony solar in Ireland Electrical Advice

Hi,

Has anyone come across DIY balcony solar panels?

These are solar panel kits you can buy that plug into a regular electrical wall outlet. They have become very popular in Germany, particularly those living in rented accommodation as you can easily take the panels with you when you move and currently generate 200MW nationwide.

They are legal in Germany and some other EU countries as of 2019 and...

Maximum Zs Value Exceeded Electrical Advice

Maximum Zs Value Exceeded Discussion ThreadMaximum Zs Value Exceeded Electrical Advice

Hi

I have recently done some testing on an installation. A submain is fed from a B50 mcb and has a zs of 1.10ohms. The maximum for this is 0.87. The cable supplying the submain is a 25mm 2 core swa with the armourings used as the cpc and is roughly a 70m run. Both glands and earth leads have been checked and are okay.

Would it be viable to fit a 300ma rcd to protect this circuit as the...

existing light (four wires) into new Led light Discussion Threadexisting light (four wires) into new Led light Electrical Advice

Hi

I've got three lights in my hallway that I'm changing to a LED light fitting - they are all controlled by two separate switches. I've done two, but I'm stuck on the third one. The first light had one of each earth, L & N, and the second light had two of each (which I've squeezed in the connector block) but as you can see the last one, there's a lot more...

Reflections on Transitioning from Plumbing to Electrical Work Discussion ThreadReflections on Transitioning from Plumbing to Electrical Work Electrical Advice

After working as a plumber and gas engineer for nearly 12 years, I decided two years ago to retrain as an electrician. It’s been a challenging but rewarding journey, and I’m on track to be fully qualified by May/June 2025. Along the way, I’ve come to really appreciate the differences between the two trades and the level of...

How to drive manually HT1621B LCD driver IC? Discussion ThreadHow to drive manually HT1621B LCD driver IC? Electrical Advice

  • Im trying to figure out how to drive (manually-bitbang) a HT1621B LCD driver IC. It is capable of driving multiplexed LCDs. They are very cheap, but only in smd form, which is a bit of a challenge to solder all its tiny 48 pins. See youtu.be/xwRXpbxjLcw - you can skip through the movie since it's a long one. I actually managed to drive them using a...
