Anyone Dealing With Topps Tiles??

Hi

Just had a bizarre experience at Topps Tiles Swindon. Just to state that I am not a Topps Tiles Tiler ( now that's a mouthful ).

I often send clients into Topps Tiles and this was the case with Mavis - incidentially in her 70's. I usually give clients the required amount of tiles they need and point them in Topps direction. Our client then deals direct with Topps Tiles and I have no financial gain from this.

Anyway Mavis buys her tiles for her bathroom , floor & walls , but mistakenly buys adhesives /grout etc. Her daughter sees the mistake and it seems fairly simple for Mavis just to get a refund. At this point the stock hasn't left Topps Tiles.

Apparently there is some issues in store that I don't just use their materials and give the money to Mavis. Easy you might think. I objected to paying the £600 charged poor Mavis for these goods. Yes £600 !! Not taking them up on their kind offer I actually went and bought all the miscellaneous adhesives etc for under £300 !!

Now I'm a person non grata as i've "done" Topps Tiles out of a £600 sale !! I thought I'd introduced a client and they'd made a tile sale. Not in Topps Tiles eyes. I'm an out and out villian lol !

I know the last company outlook was poor but acting like this is making Bankers look downright reasonable !

Anyone else had trouble with Topps Tiles ??

Same happened to me , i sent a mate into topps Taunton for a trim, came out with 400's worth of gear that i had already sorted, they were not to happy refunding, and asked if I knew what I was doing !!

i've just opened a trade account with them and its surprising how much discount you get for trade compared to normal prices. 60 to 80 % on some adhesives and trims. well worth a look

Percentage doesn't mean alot when the orginal price is three times the price of anywhere else

topps have an area out the back for trade only. there is quite a saving in the trims etc, addy was palace if I remember right. couldnt get hbb from the back as they charged full price for that

its a shame they have to play about like they do as they have a lot of outlets. at the end of the day any tiler wants to be able to pick up gear at a reasonable discount and fix it , then get paid

simples ...................we dont want to follow silly rules as if we were at school

long live tile giant

Ive got a good relationship with Topps, Ive been a TAF(Topps aproved fitter) for a number of months now, have been getting at least one job a month from them and some great trade discounts, <TRADE PRICES>
So cant really complain as yet...

Have been using Topps since i started, and get really good discount on quality materials and good discount on tiles. I'm happy to pay the prices and so are my customers. Each tiler has their preferred outlet

Hi Swindon an :welcome: im just down the road from you in calne , only ever used the swindon branch a couple of times as thy have a branch in chpenham now , the guys are all really sound in there and have never had any probs with them ,they have even let some good customers of mine use my trade discount with my say so

I use Topps for convenience where I am and also because other 'supposed' large suppliers don't seem to want to know when it comes to anything out of the normal (where deliveries are concerned) and I find them (Topps) spot on:thumbsup:

The lads are helpful, prices are good and the products are OK:thumbsup:

my nearest Topps is 12 miles away, Tile Giant is a further 200 meters down the road, if i go that way i go the extra 200 and get loads of £'s off for similar quality stuff :lol:

only ever been in Topps twice both times they wanted to charge me about 60% more than SRP so i guess they can give big discounts and still charge you more than everybody else

I deal with my local topps quite a bit, prices for the trade stuff are good and i like the fact that its kept out back and away from retail, that way you can still get stuff cheaper if only slightly than the general public as it seems all the independants give one price trade or retail. The fact they can get hold of stock within a few days also helps.

No problem with the Darlington branch, next to CTD so can bounce them off each other. No Tile Giant in Darlington but heard a whisper that they are looking for premises near the other two main tile shops

Hello All ,

Topps have lost all credibility with me as a supplier. I was sending in clients to buy tiles alone. They should have appreciated these sales and not tried to muscle in on MY clients to buying the ancillaries. They certainly shouldn't try and charge £600 for these ancillaries!! 20 metres wall , 10 metres floor & trim. A lot of money in anyones book I would think.
Too many other reputable suppliers around who really appreciate any business you can put their way.

I think head office put too much pressure on the branches to make sales and to sell addy etc not just tiles

I should imagine their sales are scrutinised and they are spoken to about failing to push the ancillaries and letting sales go to the competition

we all know the easy way out of this is to stop stocking bal and stock mapei instead

then maybe fixers will buy their addy from them as well

im not defending them I just know how cut throat these organisations are when it comes to getting sales and they pitch the branches against each other, a branch that fails to keep up will lose their current manager and possibly staff

Its a very valid and good point Mike. I did talk to the Area Manager at Topps and over 30% of trade is the add ons.
All companies have targets to meet and Topps forecast on business isn't great so the add ons are quite crucial to them at present.
On a bigger picture a tile sale with no add ons is better than no sale at all.

I did go into Topps Tiles for a price on some white 150x150 tiles, that had appeared on a contract spec. I gave them the amount I needed, and asked for the price. I nearly passed out when they told me the m2 price. They offered me a 5% discount when I gave them my card....and then tried to flog me their adhesive :yikes: I beat a hasty retreat, rang the architect, got him to change the specification, and Im thankful I havent had to go back to the Charlton branch again. It was scary for me to see dusky pink tiles with pictures of victorian ladies on them. Theres only so much this girly can take!

Pebbs

think of me then pebs, i got a bathroom to do next week with those dusky pink tiles thankfully no victorain ladys pouring jugs of water (dose anyone realy buy that stuff anymore) :ban:

Andy those are the exact ones I saw! it was like a 70's throw back, all I needed was a pink shell basin to go with them!

Pebbs

haha. I used to sell those décors and whatnot. Had many problems matching shades and even tile tolerances with field tiles on the specially-fired-to-order stuff.

Hi Swindon

I get my local topps to price match the local tile discount shop. Not sure if they offer this everywhere but worth asking. I buy 80% of my materials from them and they chuck the odd job in my direction if my diary slows up. Good relationship goes a long long way (Spec when money is involved)

I've said it before on TF

My van just speeds up when ever I drive past the local branches of Topps

I use my local topps quite alot. If you have never used one before they will charge alot until you have used them something like 3-4times then you get the full discount. The trade trims are really cheap and there own addy rapid set is good for the price imo. I do use Tile Giant more but i find the guys at my local topps good to deal with, and they give my card out without being an approved fitter.

Just thought i would stick up for em a bit!

Fair play mate. Nobody's bullying them here. They're national and clearly there would be differences between stores. And obviously different views on any policies that are nationally enforced.

Hi sstiling ,

with any business relationships are key.

I knew the staff in Topps Swindon , I pointed my clients to them to buy tiles. I thought I was being a good contact for them. Sure my clients didn't buy the add ons but in this climate any sale must be better than no sale at all. I didn't ask anything in return.

In my opinion Topps got greedy and thought they could bully me into allowing MY clients to buy the add ons from them. I now just now my clients to either Tile Store Or Giant Tile who welcome any business they get.

A key business point is someone happy with your service will tell one or two people , someone feeling aggrieved with your service will tell twenty two people !!
