Ha ha,I suppose so.
His sister is named after a Dolly Parton song, they must of known what she would look like, slim as hell with huge marakers (not blond though, well not her head ;) )

Is that song from her album Dolly Partons greatest hits? ( I think that was what it was called)

The Legend; Phil Hobson RIP

my apprentice is 17 years old , he is a good lad and listens and tries hard, he started at hackney community college as a level one diploma candidate and within 4 weeks was promoted to the level 2 course, he is a quiet type and never moans if we are late working which is quite often , yes he makes all the stupid mistakes you are supposed to make and is as green as grass at times especially when i gave hin a drill and told he to give it to the 2 chippies on site , my other lad said "look you have to make sure you dont give it to the wrong blokes as it is expensive" what are their names? he asked " Phil McRaken and Phil Macrevice" was the reply , he spent 45 minutes asking everyone on the site including the site agent where he could find the phils , the agent found it hilarious and came over and had a good crack with us after that.
Last week his tutor was asked by one of his colleagues if Luke could play for the college in an inter college sports tornament as all the kids said he could beat them all at table tennis in the canteen at lunchtimes.
he had to play all the other students of the london colleges and he won the tornament and will be representing London in the national finals in Bath in April , He is also playing in the British Premier League Table tennis event this weekend in Liverpool and will be playing the best players in Europe this weekend
Not all apprentices or 17 year olds are losers there is some amazing kids out there and we need to find them and bring the best out in them you do this by building their confidence and having a structured working environment so they know what is expected from them if you are doing
custom bathrooms and bespoke work it probably isnt the best environment for training as the beginners need repetition and site work and commercial tiling is far better for them to learn the basic skills as they get more time hands on the tools with this type of work

I agree Gary commercial tiling along with industrial and domestic work makes for a good all round tiler. A variety of environments can build a good understanding of the need for speed in a gang on big jobs, attention to detail required on up market domestic projects, imho, a mix of all things tile related makes a better tiler.

Like yourself and many members here, I feel very lucky to have experienced all these aspects of our industry. And would be confident to walk onto any tiling contract be it a swimming pool a 10,000 m2 industrial floor, or a high end domestic job.

Having said that I still sometimes get butterflies on some jobs, thinking can I handle this one, but once I start the old instincts kick in and I am fine.

I will never stop learning my trade, and that is one reason why I still love my job, no two jobs are the same. I would like to share my lifetime in tiling with the next generation. Maybe I should get into teaching, or supplement my income from things like the geometric course. I would like to write a book, I could call it "the tools I have worked with"

Those sentences (IMHO) separate people who are outstanding in their field from everyone else - no matter how experienced you are, the conscientious and skilled practitioner still thinks about what they have to do, even though their instinctive skills actually make even complicated work easy. And they love the work.

I have no doubt that apprentices benefit considerably when developing their skills from tutors who have such passion for their trade.

Thank you Andy, I do still feel unsure of myself on some jobs, even though I know I will prevail in the end.

I am sure people in show business must feel the same, top performers like Elton John, Gary Barlow or even world class footballers like Becks, must feel a bit nervous before a big concert or game.

They are just like us, humans, I know my greatest critic is me. But I am just a tiler, and I try to do my best.

I could never compare my skills to the talents of top performers or sportsmen, but I do think we all must doubt ourselves now and then.

Mr Tiler

i was 18 not too long ago. i started a college course in mechanics just after turning 18 and found employment through an agency. i enjoyed working with the car but instead of thinking about the long term decided to take the short term due to i suppose a lack of guidance in my life and threw a career away. regreted it ever since tbh now ive found something i really enjoy and think i would be really good at with time. if you ever have a job goin bri id be willing to make the 1 n 1/2 hour trip every morning to give you a hand
