ban price per meter on domestic work?

tbh I give the customer a price for the tiling based on a metreage rate, the prep is done on a day rate in case of discovering the unforeseen problems. I always give a detailed quote and price for what I know I can give a price for:thumbsup:

i like to talk it through with customers when i'm measuring up and quoting,i.e, a bathroom with grey grout on floors and white on walls,i'll say things like-"well thats 5 bags of flexible adhesive a bag of white and a bag of grey grout plus your tanking kit blah blah!"
that way i feel they start getting a mental picture before they get a price from me and don't think god 2 1/2 days work and he pockets £***

Good post Ed, I always talk the customer through the job, as David says that way if they are getting other quotes. They can compare to mine, and see if they are getting like for like As you say it's diferent than site work, where you are pricing just for fixing. Prep work can take a long time to do correctly.

I agree with Ed, I may work the job out on a sort of metre rate but round that off to a day rate.

A 3 metre splash back can't be quoted at so much a metre, to many varibles with tile sizes and the materials there made of.

Good post Ed  I agree with what your saying.

I break it all down the same as you. I never mention '£ per M2' or 'day rate' I just give the total cost and a full break down of what's included and I often try to give reasons why I'm using certain products too.

I'm in the process of designing a quote sheet which I'm getting printed onto carbon copy books (A4) so I can draw up the quote with the customer give them a copy and have a copy for myself.

I'm in agreement that I never advise a metre price (especially without viewing a job).

My quotes always include a breakdown of work to be undertaken with a total price at the bottom.

I do, however, work out how many days I think the job will take and then do the sums to see if I am better off charging based on a day rate or a metre rate. I don't believe in negotiating prices either, I always give a fair price and if the customer wants a cheaper price then good luck to them.
