If the pipe is lagged then is SHOULD be ok. The hairdryer will have the same resulot as the water just normally you cant ge the kettle into the gap. Do you have any water anywhere in the house? Or is it just the cold mains coming in thats frozen?

no burst pipes, but we had a burst water main, a very large area where without any water for 15hrs or more

there is no water anywhere else in the house that is flowing. our hot water system relies on the pressure of the cold water to allow the hot water to flow, and we have no hot water and definitely no cold water. i'm going to try again with the hairdryer aimed at the water pipe in the kitchen but if that doesn't work, i'll be calling my plumber to see if he can get the internal stop tap off. at least then he can ascertain whether there is any water inside the pipe in the house (frozen or not).

severn trent water still haven't been out to us. will have to nag them again.

i'm just sitting here starving hungry (nothing to eat breakfast off yet because no washing up has been done) and just looking at the local swimming pool timetables for leisure swims.

sorry to hear you are still without, I take it you are not on a meter, just thinking about a burst pipe now underground, but would have showed itself by now I would have thought.

If its burst between the meter and the house, you could tell by looking at the meter. It will be moving! 😉 Alternatively place a long rod against the meter and your ear against the other end of the rod, you'll here water flowing.

well I have water! it's back! don't know when it arrived mind you. we've been out since 10am at the swimming pool and then out for lunch. all is well albeit, air is still chugging round the pipework.

gonna check the meter under the sink and then have a nosey in the inspection hole on the pavement. Severn Trent didn't log our call yesterday so will only get out to us tomorrow morning. oh well.
