Ok, I have told her she needs to get the walls plastered. I was trying to clean off the top flakey layer and it just keeps falling of and getting worse, there won't be much left if I carry on. I am not risking the tiles falling off the walls when I have finished the job, I can do without the hassle!

Executive decision made!

Ok lets hear you guys tell me I'm wrong! lol

In the past I have removed all the skim coat, primed the bonding within an inch of its life and then tiled, worked for me then but you have done the right thing.People who want a rush job regardless of the difficulties are ignorant and don't mind jeopordising your reputation,it's worth going with your instinct, and advice of us lads and lassies here

I did a 4 week course at Chase. Really good course. I am in touch with 3 of the lads on the course with me and all are doing well!

I have always been quite a practical person but there is no better way to learn something than actually do it. I have ripped down my bathroom and kitchen tiles. I took the toilet off and the sink, I took the radiator off too. All stuff I had never done until then but now it has given me confidence to do it again.

I have to say that the advice from the guys on here has been invaluble, they have helped me out in some situations I would have really struggled with otherwise.

Plus the more stuff you can do yourself, the more you can charge!!

You will get the confidence, i am starting to get it already!

you've done the right thing in telling the customer to get it plastered, if i advise a customer that a wall needs to be plastered first and they will not go with it i will walk away, not worth the damaged reputation should anything go wrong. ie: tiles in the bath due to poor substrate.

well said that man......

Did the right thing mate.
I always say to people' dyou want a quick job or a proper job' that usually makes them realise things cant be done over night.
This way, any problem that may occur with the walls are through no fault of yours.
Your the tiler not the plasterer, each man to his trade is what i say, no one can do everything
