Hello from South Cheshire

Bit of a tiling double act; Jon tiles, and Mary grouts. Renovating a 5 bedroom cottage, mostly by ourselves. Good forum here, and appreciate the advice. Been reading up on epoxy grouts, as I'm tiling a wetroom at the moment, hardiebackerboards on walls, schluter membrane on floor. Wondering how difficult the cleaning would be when using epoxy grouts on a cleft slate floor.

I've never used epoxy on slate but would say do a very very small area at a time, Once it's gone off that would be a nightmare to remove from the face of the slate.

Hello.

Welcome to the forum.

If you need any help on tiles give us a shout and i'll see what myself and CTD can do to help.

Good luck with your project.

Cheers.

Thanks, Whitebeam. We're planning to use Bal Easypoxy, but not mix the whole lot in one go. In terms of clean up, would it be best to go for hot water, or something more solvent based?

Posh part of South Cheshire near Nantwich. We still have a property in Newcastle Under Lyme.

Hi welcome to the forums. Why, particularly epoxy grout?

thinking of epoxy grout partly for water proofing (but not so much of a worry because I specced membranes and backerboards) and to keep the "as freshly tiled" look. I hate stained and mouldy grout. Just a bit concerned about using it with slate - I've read about and heard tales of woe with slate and cementitious grouts. I will be using an impregrator sealer, but.... any thoughts??

Welcome.

Read this: Epoxy and waterproofing

I'm do not know wether or not using epoxy in combination with slate is a good idea, but I do know it's not a very good idea to combine waterproofing, cementious adhesive, and epoxy grout, for reasons mentioned in the link.

If you use cementious adhesives and grouts specifically designed for natural stone, you'll be fine. Epoxy is overkill in almost all domestic applications, and often it's more hassle than it's worth; for the purpose of waterproofing, membranes is the best solution for domestic applications, unless there is rising damp, in which case you need a waterproofing system which allows for vapor diffusion.

Most modern grouts have additives which provide some protection against mold and discolouration, and that protection strengthened if you use some sort of impregnator. Regular cleaning and using correctly chosen cleaning agents, and other materials, are your best allies if you want to maintain the "fresh" look and avoid mold.

Enjoy, and good luck.
