Just shad an argument with my father in law over something really silly and petty and it got escalated

He has been tiling for years but hes one of them blokes that can do everything

Anyway, He says when you put adhesive on the wall you only use the notches to put it on. (Never ever use the straight edge) i say you use a gauging trowel to put the ahesive evenly on the flat side of the trawel, then paste it on the wall then go over it with the notched to give an even finish for the tile to be placed

What do you do so i can settle this argument, im not arsed if im wrong either

He also says im wasting my money on expensive tools, he only needs a trowel an spirit level for his jobs. You know what these old fashioned guys are like

Straight from the bucket with a bucket trowel onto the notched trowel and then on to the wall and spread making sure of good coverage and contact with substrate.............peeps have there own methods..so your father in law is right.......

sorry tys i use the same method as your father in law i dont think it matters what way you do it as long as you get an even finish

thats what i was saying Ramic, but he was adament that i was wrong and he was right. he doesnt even use a bucket trowel

well ive been tought on the course to put it on the flat bit spread it on the wall like plastering then go over with the trowel for an even finish
----
he cut then with a very old rubbish tile cutter

If thats what you were taught then everybody is right with their own methods. It sounds like the same action twice to me though, I'm with Ramic trowel straight in and onto the wall, nice even application.
