Tiler left Jerusalem Marble tiles unsealed

After reading all through the thread, I'm a bit confused...

You were responsible for providing all materials. You mentioned that you'd ordered the sealant, but it hadn't arrived. How was he supposed to seal with no sealant, how was he supposed to grout until the tiles were sealed?

I can't believe you allowed your wet dogs to lay on a floor that hadn't been sealed or grouted, I also can't believe that you're trying to hold the tiler responsible.

Or is there still more of the story to come?

I can't believe you allowed your wet dogs to lay on a floor that hadn't been sealed or grouted, I also can't believe that you're trying to hold the tiler responsible.

I don't mind you being blunt - I do not think you fully understand the situation though. The fact that the sealant I ordered had not arrived is not really relevant (in hindsight I should not have added thia) we had other sealant available which we had earmarked for another job and in any event the tiler couls easily have bought some - he bought some more adhesive. He is not an independant tiler, being an employee of the builder we were using for a larger project (incidentally I am not placing any blame on the tiler, I hold the builder responsble, but I wanted to gauge opinion).

We were not aware that the floor had been left in a state in which we could not use it (tiles wer polished so it is not possible to tell by sight), I would have thought that the customer would be informed if any precautions needed to be taken (each night previously he had informed us of the tiles which we could not tread on because they were not set). Despite the fact that we were unaware that the floor was in an unsealed state, we did not allow wet dogs to lay on the floor, judging by the mark my conclusion after the event is that the dog may have been damp.

The fact is, as we discovered later, the tiler was not aware that the tiles needed sealing (although his employer certainly was).

IMO any tiler worth his salt should know that marble needs sealing!!

not read all the replies to steve's thread, but probably the tiler was gonna seal after grouting, correctly so in my opinion. Will have to read all posts to see why he never grouted tho'!!

Ill save your eyes doug, in a nutshell, tiler went and laid the floor, got it laid at the end of the day and went for the long bank holiday weekend, didnt seal in probably as you say waiting to grout it, returned to find floor ruined due to marks from shoes or what appears to be the base of a stool used by customer and possibly a damp dog laying on it.

Basically wasnt sealed and was walked on etc for a number or days and is now filthy, tiler returned to grout etc to find it ruined and walked on the job.

Dispute appers to have arised as the tiler according to the customer didnt advise that the floor wasnt sealed or didnt know it needed sealing, and allowed the customer and family to use the floor etc. The customer did and ordered the sealer but it didnt arrive in time, musnt have told the tiler that the sealer was delayed as he states that tiler didnt know it needed sealing.

so, what is the customer doing ordering the sealer, if there's a project manager and a tiler on the job. Sounds like too many chiefs and not enough indians, always causes a communication breakdown imo

Right, it's becoming clearer now. You didn't explain yourself very well in the first post.

I wouldn't blame the tiler for not staying over the bank holiday weekend to seal and grout. If he was an employee of the builder, he probably wouldn't have been paid weekend/bank holiday rates.

To be honest I think that both the OP and the builder share the blame.

And I'm not a professional tiler, just an interested bystander.

The more I read the forum, the more I realise all that could go wrong with my own diy tiling job.

My guess is that Knockdown is to re-surface the tile. I.E take off the top layer. Which is why it would no longer have a polished finish unless you mechanically re-polished it
