Safe isolation of rotary isolator when no incoming voltage present. Discussion ThreadSafe isolation of rotary isolator when no incoming voltage present. Electrical Advice

Hi all, trying to work out the best way for proving safe isolation of a motor.

Motor is fed from a contactor inside control panel, it then passes through a local isolator and then to the motor, the isolator has auxillary contacts so that when it is in the off position the contactor will not pull in and supply...

RCD Trips Electrical Advice

RCD Trips Discussion ThreadRCD Trips Electrical Advice

Hello,
I'm not an electrician. My RCD at home constantly trips. I tried turning off the power, resetting the RCD and putting the circuits back one by one, to work out what was tripping it. All were okay, except when I turned back on 'downstairs sockets' or 'upstairs sockets' either one of those would immediately cause the RDC to trip. I figured it may be a faulty appliance so went round and unplugged everything. However this made...

Question about evidence over 2 different sites Discussion ThreadQuestion about evidence over 2 different sites Electrical Advice

Hi
I’m currently doing my 2357 NVQ. I have a list of wiring systems and containment system's to gather evidence for which I’ve got quite a bit.

I was just wondering do you have to do all of them twice on a different site? Or do I hit all criteria once but over more then 1 site

Thanks

Forum information overload Electrical Advice

Forum information overload Discussion ThreadForum information overload Electrical Advice

This will probably not be popular, but I joined the electrician's forum to talk and learn about electrical things.
It seems we are now being pushed to post threads about every topic under the sun, electrical or not.
I'm finding it tedious to condense and distill all of these topics into information that is useful to me.
And for this reason I'm out...

W2D4 - DGA What is it and why do we do it? Discussion ThreadW2D4 - DGA What is it and why do we do it? Electrical Advice

What is DGA? Dissolved Gas Analysis.
This is just a VERY basic explanation of DGA.
Power transformers use oil as both an insulator and for cooling. Under normal conditions the oil will contain assorted gasses such as C0, C02 and Hydrogen. As the oil ages or under fault conditions the oil can, over time, break down releaseing gasses. By measuring the gasses and...

Today has been mainly driving. Started off from home, 4+ hour drive to Kent, take 6 oil samples (about 1 hour) then 4+ hour drive home. Didn't enjoy it. Traffic was crap basically from M4/M32 junction until the Cardiff side of Newport. The transformers are in sound deadening enclosures. The temp was up in the 30+ C. Clueless householder here!

My wife told me John Lewis refused to plug in our new oven this morning due to "high readings on sockets". It looks on their paperwork like the "Pre Earth Loop Impedance Test" failed with 2.02 Ohms.
