I thought this would be a good topic for all you traders, trainers and collages out there, I have trained and brought on tilers over the last 13 years however I have only just been thinking of taking on an apprentice, has anyone got any experience of this? Is it a government mine field of red tape? Or does the apprentice just up an leave to the bright lights and bigger money when qualified? Or tie that person to a contract
throwing it out there, what's the thoughts?

hi there, i looked into this there is funding here in scotland available it seems but there is criteria attached you must meet to get it which is fine but you must have a lad you can trust who will show up and also commit and work hard. the funding is not backdated if this is not met which was going to be an issue for me. i.e if college is missed and tests are missed or failed you dont get the funding which is fair enough.

the main issue i have found is the lads themselves, i had and still have an opportunity for someone to be taken on and trained up..i have tried a good number of guys out and have yet to meet one who i actually beleive is a grafter with the qualities i need to do the job week in week out.

There is plenty of funding available for apprenticeships. The TTA is desperate to give money away to members wishing to take on Apprentices. Also Construction Skills has a funding plan all of which can give you a grant of £11,500 during a three year plan. Taking on apprentices is always a gamble but you can get assistance with his training plan. I have been in the industry for 50 years and if tillers want to leave you for pastures new they will. But at least they leave with a good trained background funny though they always return when they realise that the grass in never greener!! Bob Howard MBE
