Clays, it seems to be centered around the 2 tonne gross weight and the fact that a van may not be derived from a car.

There is one (small) group of vans which have the same speed limits are cars by virtue of the definitions in Schedule 6 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act of 1984. These are vans that are both derived from a car chassis and also have a maximum laden weight of no more than 2 tonnes. This means that the weight of the vehicle and the payload it is designed to be able to carry when added together do not exceed 2 tonnes. The van design must be a derivative of a car body, it is not sufficient that it looks similar to a particular car.

I've got a Transit and had no idea about this and bet theres plenty of other van drivers who did'nt either

My cousin is a copper and works in the Traffic Police and when I asked him about the vans as I have a Kangoo he said limit on normal road is 60mph the Traffic I had was 50mph. However they very rarely pulled anyone over in a Traffic or Transit size van for traveling at 60mph same as they rarely pull over HGV 1 drivers for traveling at 50mph on a normal road when they should be doing 40mph.

Shortly after getting my van (VW Transporter) I was stopped as part of an excercise by the West Sussex police to check that van driver knew about the applicable speed limits for good vehicles. They were handing out stickers to reminder you
