Van speed limits

Thanks for pointing this out, I had NO idea!

I reckon though that if you are driving "sensibly" then you aren't likely to be pulled over. If your van is not an absolute bucket then the police are unlikely to want the paperwork.

I have overtaken Cop cars on these roads and never been pulled. I had no idea this law even existed and I saw this very useful post earlier this week whilst I was away working in Bath.

The first thing I did when i got home tonight was ask my wife (Driving Instructor) What would be the quickest you would be allowed to drive my van on a single or dual carriageway road with a National Speed Limit sign and her answer was 60 and 70 so she didn't know either:huh2:

Shortly after getting my van (VW Transporter) I was stopped as part of an excercise by the West Sussex police to check that van driver knew about the applicable speed limits for good vehicles. They were handing out stickers to reminder you

So what gives? I have a Transit Connect LWB High roof.

That sticker suggests I can drive as normal? Or not? :huh2:

The sticker I was given would suggest that the reduced speed limits are applicable for all goods vehicles under 3.5t.

Having read the info on the DFT link ( Department for Transport - Clarification of national speed limits for vans )

It seems that the limits apply to all vans apart from car derived vans. The paragraph below is straight off the DFT website (already quoted by Cornish Crofter)

Q. Are there any exemptions from these lower speed limits for vans?

A. There is one (small) group of vans which have the same speed limits are cars by virtue of the definitions in Schedule 6 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act of 1984. These are vans that are both derived from a car chassis and also have a maximum laden weight of no more than 2 tonnes. This means that the weight of the vehicle and the payload it is designed to be able to carry when added together do not exceed 2 tonnes. The van design must be a derivative of a car body, it is not sufficient that it looks similar to a particular car.

Idrive a Citroen Dispatch, a local trafic cop informed me the speed limits for my van are, motorway,70. dual carrageway,60. national speed limit road,50. It's not the police we have to watch for, it's the mobile cameras. If the opperator knows the law, he will do you!

It is something that has been developed off a different platform, i.e ford escort car is then changed to be in a van body but runs on essentially the same mechanicals, wheels, engine gearbox etc, and has the same basic "family" shape as the original vehicle.

Not a daft question by the way.

Grumps is bang on, an easy way to think of it is when you see a car that should have windows in the back but just has metal panels instead then its a Car Derived Van, basically when a car manufacturer takes a car and rips out the back seats and doesnt put in rear windows, someone on here has an MG ZR car derived van, cant find the thread.
