Phil, when I started there were still a lot of old timers that were wetsetting even though thinset and backerboard were readily avaialble....old ways die hard.

I tried once to soak and set some 4 1/4's over fresh mud and it was a PITA. My hat's off the to old timers that did the work that way and made 'em stick!
