First Mosaic job

Tilers Forums Official Sponsors

hi paul, suggest you have a thin bed for mosaics and with white adhesive. Try to use your float to flush them with the tiles. To hold them use nails. any problems give us a quick email. Good luck, isa

Thanks Isa,

do you need to use spacers between the tiles?

Cheers

Paul

you don't need spacers if they are on the net. but if they are very big mosaics you could use spacers inbetween. Try not to build any tiles on top of the mosiacs for at least a day. isa

Hi mate,

Spacers that match the space between each tile on the mosaic could be used to maintain an equal gap between each sheet of mosaic but, there is no real need to use spacers bewteen all the tiles on the sheet if you pin under the top tile on the sheet.

it would be worthwhile to keep some masonary nails and plasterboard nails in your toolbox. If anything starts to slip you can use these to supoort when tiling.

If mosaic are slipping I fix some nails under the top tiles on the sheet to hold the mosaics securely in place. If you are doing a border you cn work from a low datum point on the wall when you get to the mosaic border fix the border, proceed to tile above the border again using nails fixed under the first row of tiles above the mosiac border. Alternativley you could mark out your datum and batton out to begin tiling at the first row of tiles directly above where your border will be, if you are using a rapid setting adhesive the tiles will be secure enough for you to begin tiling the mosaic border after you tile from datum to ceiling.

dont be afraid to cut the mosiac sheet to fix a tile thats not straight on the matt.

I do it all the time , i like perfection

hi,

thanks to everybody how has answered so far i really appreciate whats
the difference between mosaic and normal nippers are mosaic nippers
essential?

Hi mate,

do you mean the scor and snap cutters?

if so, they are alright, but not realy essential in my opinion mate.

you can cut mosaics with your manual and wet cutters too. Some times if Im using mosaics that are approx 50mm, I cut off the last row at the side of the sheet (if cuts need to be made at internal corner) and score them all individualy and cut them with my manual cutter.

Why do you need both?

masonry nails are harder mate

and the plasterboard nails can bend sometimes if nail into surfaes other than plasterboard

one or the other would be fine, i keep both as the masonary nails can be used to nail into brick walls to hold lighting festoons, battoning out on sold walls or nailing string lines to block work/ concrete etc

Paul,
perhaps an idea to have some panel nails to put along the tops row of your tiles.

These will stop the mosaic sliding down the wall a help keep your lines straight horizontally.

Just afew along the tile.

Ive found this invaluable

good luck
