They said no drinking or eating outside site, you had to go up the road, the same for phone calls. They didnt want a a load of trades outside the front of the building. I made a mistake, I hold my hands up to that, but to be banned is a bit extreme to say the least. They said they didnt want to see builders smoking and drinking in this 'part of town'. So anyway thats the first time Ive been slung of and banned, they got a stunning reception, we did a good job, and we will never work for them again. Some poor bugger is going to have to go through it again in the future but it wont be us. There is a bit of karma though, because someone smashed one of the treads after everything had been signed off. And as Im banned I cant go back in to the templating. Not my problem...let em get on with it now.

Lynn, this is typical of site work these days. Currently on a job where you arent allowed to smoke (fair enough) drinking and eating only in canteen (huge site, canteen with 6 chairs) no radios, no smiling and definitely no earning a wage.

And H&S came on site the other day and made some new rules on the spot. New rules are

# no vans on site, not even to unload (I mean......come on!!!)
# to use my plasplugs master tiler I need to now have not only the crap plastic guard wobbling around, I need to also wear ear defenders, goggles, gloves and my hard hat. You know, just incase.
#hard hats to be worn at all times, even in the plots. To this, the plasterers stuck up their fingers and pretty much left site.

It is worse than school. We are not trusted with anything.

I agree, I spent two miserable weeks on media city Manchester, hard hats (fair enough) high vis vests (OK) but gloves and goggles? who can tile with gloves on? I know some do, but I can't. The goggles are a joke when using a wet cutter, as soon as you switch on your goggles get a nice coat of slurry, rendering you blind. Not very safe.

My other gripe is the banning of the fold up, hop up platform. We were working in small toilet blocks, yet we had to wait for scaffolders to erect tower scaffold, once up we had no room to work.

HSE has its place, but common sense should prevail:thumbsdown:

See, thats what they are trying to do, replace common sense with Health and Safety. I would prefer to sign something to say "Adam Bolter takes full responsibility and liability for his actions and the use of his own tools" or whatever, but that is NEVER gonna happen!

Its actually pretty hard to tile in gloves.

I reckon in 5 yrs time we will all be wearing full 'haz mat' suits, welders faceguards and chainsaw trousers and gloves. You know......just incase.

Adam and Phil your both right in everything you wrote. Sometimes you just need to get of site for some fresh air, the noise drives me mental at the best of times, then you have to contend with people walking over your work. Im templating some treads, they can walk up the ramp but no the idiots can see your working and want to walk up them...give me a break! I got pulled because the lads had put the wrong colour tape over the corex.. f right off! I was supposed to be on holiday last week, it got cancelled because we were under the cosh, I stayed and got banned for having a coffee outside. And the wearing of gloves when doing the wet cutting is another bugbear, now they want you to wear goggles, well who can see though those goggles! No hop ups on site, so like Phil said you wait forever for them to do the tower, then you cant move! I know I rant from time to time, I just want the works finished, because I cant stand all the pettiness I get everyday lately.

It seems like they are afraid we will earn a decent wage.

Sounds like there more freedom in an open prison..

Very true, I worked on Broadmoor (Ok so technically a hospital but you get the idea...) last year, getting in and out was a challenge but once in there as long as you had a high viz vest on you could do what you wanted, drink coffee wherever and whenever you wanted, cut anything without goggles, gloves or hard hats.... etc......
I sort of miss the laid back approach to H+S however I don't miss the panic of walking past some of the nutters while getting to and from the area we were working in :yikes:
